Outdoor Concerts Booming in Memphis

The city of Memphis is abuzz with excitement as the weather warms up and outdoor venues throughout the city gear up for a season full of concerts. The Overton Park Shell in Midtown to The Grove in Germantown, the BankPlus Amphitheater in Southaven to the Maria Montessori School Amphitheater in Harbor Town, all have incredible music performances scheduled for the coming months.

Overton Park Shell

The historic Overton Park Shell in midtown Memphis has announced its annual Orion Free Concert Series, which will run from May 17th through October 12th, interspersed with a mid-season break. “This year, we are crossing all genres and giving access to The Shell’s mission boldly and without barriers, with special emphasis on Memphis artists,” Overton Park Shell Executive Director Natalie Wilson stated.

The concert series will showcase performances by well-known acts like Sister Hazel, Cowboy Mouth, and Shamarr Allen to name a few. It will also feature special events like Sunset Symphony in collaboration with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Country Blues Festival, the annual Stax Music Academy Showcase, PowerPop Festival, and many more.

BankPlus Amphitheater

The BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove is ready with a selection of big-name shows lined up for the summer and fall. The much-awaited concert by Irish rocker Hozier is already sold out. The venue is expected to announce more shows soon, making it a hot spot for Memphis music lovers.

MMS River Series

The Maria Montessori School Amphitheater in Harbor Town will once again play host to the annual River Series. Created by co-owner of Goner Records, Zac Ives, the River Series has been hosting original music concerts at this venue for nearly a decade. The amphitheater setting provides patrons with an exceptional concert experience amidst the local community.

Grind City Brewing

After the success of its Grind City Music Festival, the Grind City Brewing will continue to host more concerts this summer. The venue has already announced an August 20th performance by prog-jam titans Primus.

Germantown Performing Arts Center’s The Grove

Starting in early May, Germantown Performing Arts Center will launch a weekly concert series at its outdoor venue, The Grove. The Concerts in The Grove program will feature performances from both local and national artists including Marcella Simien, Alice Hasen, and Tommy Prine.

The music scene in Memphis is undeniably vibrant and the myriad of outdoor concerts announced for this season will certainly surface as a testament to Memphis’s rich musical heritage and modern talent as well.
