In Memphis, Tennessee, the controversy around major infrastructure projects is escalating. To the dismay of local residents, the construction project on Elvis Presley Boulevard has been put on hold yet again. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) released a statement revealing that the project isn’t included in its current ten-year development plan. Despite being included in its 2014-2016 multimodal programme, development wasn’t ready in time for the funding rollouts, thus financing was redirected to other projects.

The recent announcement has stirred up local reactions. Sheila Mayes, a resident who lives and works along the construction stretch, described the circumstances as “a mess.” She said, “The accidents and impact on businesses have been dreadful. It’s been going on for far too long.”
Another resident, Louis Mack, recounted how he recently blew a tire on the Boulevard, “It was only three days ago, and I had just gotten it fixed. It’s been quite a rough ride”.

According to TDOT, the Elvis Presley Blvd. construction project is one among the 600 state-wide projects not included in their ten-year plan due to funding constraints. The state agency clarified that there aren’t specific accounts holding funds for projects until they’re ready for development. All project funds are spent annually to secure federal funding.
The city authorities, however, have responded by stating they will discuss the matter with TDOT in an attempt to convince them to reconsider. The common consensus among the populace and city officials is that the completion of this project is a priority and needs to happen sooner rather than later.
