Memphis: A City of Music, Barbecue, and Missed Opportunities
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Let’s chat about our beloved city, Memphis. It seems like every time we turn around, we’re getting the short end of the stick when it comes to recognition, and it’s starting to get a little frustrating. Yes, we have our fair share of challenges, but if there’s one thing we can always count on to put a smile on our faces, it’s our music and of course, our barbecue!
The BBQ Museum: A Missed Chance?
Now, here’s a kicker that’s making folks shake their heads: the world’s very first museum dedicated to the art of barbecue is slated to open next spring, but guess where? That’s right, Kansas City. The new museum is gearing up to be a delightful spot described as “where barbecue comes alive,” and it will highlight the major regions of barbecue, including Memphis, the Carolinas, and Texas.
Now, don’t get me wrong — there’s nothing against Kansas City. It’s a fine city with some good eats. However, let’s set the record straight: barbecue as we know it originated in the South, thanks largely to enslaved Americans. They had to make do with what they had, which was mostly pork, not beef, and that’s the magic we carry on in Memphis today.
A Look Back in Time
Memphis has long been a mecca for music lovers and foodies alike. For those with a history lesson in mind, let’s rewind to the 1980s when we got a raw deal with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame being planted in Cleveland instead of right here in our music capital. That still stings a little, doesn’t it?
And let’s not forget the National Museum of African American Music that opened just a few years back—in Nashville. That decision sparked some serious conversation and disappointment around our town. Why aren’t we getting the recognition we deserve? It appears we may have fallen short in securing the public and private funding needed to bring these landmark projects to life in Memphis.
