Meet the Musical Muse of Memphis: Deborah Swiney
Ah, Memphis! A city steeped in musical history, from the soulful melodies of the blues to the sweet sounds of soul and jazz. Among its vibrant artists shines a remarkable gem, Deborah Swiney. This dynamic woman has a captivating story that breathes life into our city’s legacy, and we’re excited to share it with you!
A Harmonious Childhood
Growing up in South Memphis, Deborah’s love for music was ignited early on. “My earliest memories,” she recalls fondly, “are of listening to my mom and sister play the radio, tuning into stations like WDIA and WLOK. Our week would be filled with blues and R&B, but Sundays were sacred for gospel.” With such a rich musical environment, it’s no surprise that Deborah’s talent flourished.
She fondly remembers the sounds echoing through her neighborhood, where music was as common as the warm Memphis air. From blues legends like Memphis Minnie and Rudy Williams to saxophonists and trumpeters gracing her hometown, inspiration was never in short supply. “I would ride my bike past their homes, knowing I was surrounded by greatness,” she reminisces with a smile.
Musical Beginnings
At around the age of ten, Deborah’s musical journey took flight when her mother signed her up for piano lessons with Ms. Myrtle Tyus, a local Juilliard graduate. “It was a dream to learn from someone so talented and passionate,” she beams. This spark led her to join her elementary school choir, igniting a flame that would guide her towards a promising future.
Deborah’s admiration for vocal groups soared when she saw The Jackson Five perform on television. “Michael’s voice had a magic to it,” she recalls, “and the harmonies were like nothing I had ever heard before!” Despite her love for music, she initially focused on family responsibilities, placing her dreams on hold—as many young people do.
The Turning Point
After tying the knot and then navigating the ups and downs of life, Deborah found the courage to reclaim her passions. “My divorce was a wake-up call,” she says. “I realized life was too short not to follow my dreams.” She joined a band and balanced her newfound love for music with her career as an accounting manager.
In 1995, Deborah opened a gift shop called The Nile on South Main Street. “Back then, it was quite desolate,” she explains. “But I felt I was helping create a blossoming community. I closed the shop in 2004 and dove headfirst into music. That’s when my real journey began.”
Musical Adventures and Achievements
Over the years, Deborah had the incredible opportunity to sing backup for the legendary Rev. Al Green from 1992 to 1997. “Can you imagine that? Touring, singing globally—it was surreal,” she gushes. Her experiences didn’t stop there; she graced iconic shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show and even performed at Bill Clinton’s inauguration. “I truly feel the power of music to bring people together was showcased that day,” she reflects.
While the pandemic posed challenges for musicians everywhere, Deborah’s calendar overflowed with private events, keeping the spirit of her art alive. In 2017, she released an album titled I Remember Rio, inspired by her travels, especially trips to Brazil. And recently, she collaborated with Irish jazz artist Nigel Mooney, where she not only contributed her vocals but also wrote a song for his album!
Giving Back to the Community
Deborah’s love for Memphis shines even brighter with her visionary project, the Sunset Jazz at Court Square Concert Series, founded in 2018. “It started as a simple idea to bring live music to downtown,” she explains. With a warm smile, she notes how it has grown tremendously, bringing joy to locals and visitors alike.
When asked about the Memphis music scene, she lights up, “It’s unique! People come from all over to experience it. Being a part of it is a blessing.” You can catch her performing every Thursday night at The Cove during Jazz Night, where the sounds of her elegance resonate and invite all to enjoy.
Words of Wisdom
As a loving caretaker to her sister and a proud grandmother, Deborah encourages the younger generation to chase their dreams. “Write down your goals, believe in yourself, and don’t let negativity hold you back,” she advises. “Music fuels my happiness, and I hope to inspire others to find their passion.”
With every note she sings, Deborah Swiney resonates not just in Memphis but across the musical world. Her story is a reminder that our roots shape us, our passions drive us, and our love for music can light the way forward. So, here’s to Deborah—our very own FACE of Memphis!
