Memphis Says Goodbye to a Legal Legend: Mike Fletcher’s Retirement

Memphis is getting ready to bid adieu to a beloved figure in its legal community! After more than three decades of dedicated service, Deputy Chief Legal Officer Attorney Mike Fletcher will be hanging up his legal boots at the end of this year. Fletcher, who has played a pivotal role in representing the city since 1992, will officially retire at the end of 2024.

A Journey Through Law and Community

Fletcher’s journey began in Illinois, but it was in Memphis where he truly made his mark. He moved to the city in 1969 on a basketball scholarship to then-Memphis State University, where he would later obtain his law degree. His career kicked off at Memphis Area Legal Services, laying the foundation for his impressive legal journey.

Appointed to the deputy chief legal officer role in 2017, Fletcher has been a steady hand navigating various legal challenges that the city faced, always striving to promote the best interest of Memphis and its residents. In his own words, “I really can’t say one case that I had that was any more significant than another. I think the work that we do to try to make the city better is hard.”

Words of Praise

City of Memphis Chief Legal Officer Tannera Gibson had nothing but glowing remarks about Fletcher’s career and contributions. She stated, “Mike has been an exemplary leader and a true champion for our city, and we have been fortunate to have the benefit of his expertise and institutional knowledge for several decades.” It’s clear that Fletcher’s commitment to the community has left a lasting impact.

Golf and a New Chapter

As Fletcher prepares for retirement, he has expressed a shared sense of anticipation. When asked about his post-retirement plans, he excitedly mentioned that he looks forward to finally getting out on the golf course! He specifically plans to check out the renovated Links at Audubon, making it clear that he’s ready to embrace leisure time after years of hard work.

What’s Next for the City Legal Team?

With the departure of such a seasoned professional, there are questions about the future. But fear not, Memphis! The role will be filled by Odell Horton Jr., who brings his own wealth of experience to the table. Most recently serving as general counsel for Memphis Shelby County Schools, Horton has also held significant roles in other major organizations, showcasing his capability and expertise.

Much like Fletcher, Horton’s career reflects a strong commitment to public service and community support, so hopes are high that he will continue the legacy of excellence established by Fletcher.

A Fond Farewell

As Fletcher approaches his last days in office, it’s certain that he will be missed. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and a genuine desire to help improve the city will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of many. In a world where change is constant, the mark left by such exemplary professionals stands strong as a testament to what it means to truly serve a community.

So, Memphis, as you prepare to say goodbye to Mike Fletcher, let’s not only celebrate his retirement but also the profound impact he has had on the city he so dearly loves. Here’s to new beginnings for all involved, but especially to enjoying those sunny days on the golf course for Mr. Fletcher!
