The creative billboard campaign is backed by Amelia Bonow, the founder of Shout Your Abortion, a grassroots organization aimed at encouraging women to openly share their abortion experiences. Bonow emphasizes the importance of removing stigma around this often-taboo subject. Together with the Memphis-based reproductive health organization Choices, they hope to shed light on all available options for women facing unplanned pregnancies.

“Whether that’s receiving pills by mail, contacting an abortion fund to leave the state to seek clinic care, or reaching out to local organizations like Choices, we want women to know they have support,” Bonow stated.

A Different Perspective

However, not everyone is on board with the advertising messages. The CEO of the pro-life organization Life Choices, Sumner, expressed concern about the messages being conveyed by the billboards. “Abortion is not the best option. There are other choices out there,” Sumner remarked. “Life Choices of Memphis exists to educate and empower women to choose and treasure life. That means they can choose parenting or they can choose adoption.”

Legal Proceedings Unfold

This billboard campaign coincides with intense legal discussions. On Thursday, the ongoing debates about abortion were brought to Tennessee Chancery Court. A three-judge panel issued a temporary injunction favoring the Center for Reproductive Rights, addressing vague language in a 2023 Tennessee law regarding medical exceptions for certain abortion cases. Some physicians, acting as plaintiffs in this lawsuit, remained anxious about whether their medical licenses were at risk.

“What’s written down is quite vague and ambiguous. It’s not articulated in medical terms. Doctors truly don’t know when the law applies, prompting them to stay clear of providing necessary care,” explained Linda Goldstein, senior counsel for Tennessee Right to Life.

A Broader Context

In a statement concerning the recent court decision, Tennessee Right to Life conveyed their disappointment. “This law was carefully crafted in 2019 and debated to clarity in 2023 by a bipartisan majority of the state legislature. For these judges to impose their own interpretations instead of upholding the legislative decisions made by the constituents is a clear breach of the separation of powers,” said a spokesperson.
