Breaking News from Memphis: Man Arrested in Northaven Grocery Store Shooting

Memphis, TN – In a significant turn of events, the memories of a tragic incident that rattled the Northaven community more than a year ago are finally finding some closure. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) announced the arrest of 24-year-old Lamarious Rattler, who has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting that took place in the parking lot of the Penny Pantry grocery store.

Community in Shock

On October 19, 2023, the small community of Northaven found itself in a state of shock when gunfire erupted in the lot of its only grocery store, causing chaos and fear among the residents. Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner of the SCSO noted the peculiar situation that the community faced, stating, “I think this brings a little sigh of relief to the Northaven community.”

Buckner recalled that fateful day vividly, explaining how the crime shook the local neighborhood. “The Penny Pantry is the only business that rests inside of the Northaven community. So, when something like this happens in the parking lot of the only business in the community, it creates panic and concern.” Thankfully, the residents can now feel a bit more at ease, knowing that alleged murderer Lamarious Rattler is off the streets.

Details on the Arrest

Fast forward to Friday morning, November 22, 2024; deputies of the SCSO apprehended Rattler at Third Cove in Memphis around 8 a.m. He faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

The community had been awaiting this arrest since the tragic incident. With a recent BOLO issued for Rattler, the excitement and relief are palpable among Northaven residents. It’s quite a big deal when someone you believe has put your safety at risk is finally brought into custody.

Community Support and Safety Plans

This news also comes on the heels of various public safety announcements from local leaders, including a new city-wide public safety plan unveiled by Mayor Paul Young. The timing couldn’t be better, as the community has been demanding more efforts against crime to protect their small neighborhood.

Everyone in Northaven was just trying to get back to normal life. After all, it’s the place where families shop for their groceries, and nothing should come between them and their daily routines. Following the incident, the “Penny Pantry” was more than just a grocery store; it became a symbol of resilience for the community, showing their determination to overcome the challenges they faced together.

One Step at a Time

While this arrest is an excellent step towards justice for the victim and reassurance for the community, there’s still a long road ahead. Law enforcement and community leaders like Mayor Young are aware that public safety requires ongoing attention and efforts. From improving safety measures to ensuring that residents feel safe walking through their neighborhoods, the work continues in earnest.

The peaceful days of sunny, chilly moments—like today with highs around 55°F and light winds—are what the residents of Northaven cherish. They deserve to feel safe as they enjoy their community, shop at the grocery store, and lead their daily lives without fear.

As this story develops, we hope to see the Northaven community grow stronger and more unified, rallying around their shared experiences and looking forward to a safer future together.
