MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a bit of good news amid recent crime reports, the quick thinking of a car owner at the Laurelwood Shopping Center helped thwart an attempted car theft last week. It’s always alarming when news like this breaks, particularly when it strikes close to home, but let’s dive into what happened.
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, around midday, a theft attempt took place in the parking lot of this popular shopping spot located on Poplar Avenue. According to police reports, potential thieves were eyeing a white car parked among shoppers as they went about their day. It’s a scenario that can happen to anyone, and it’s a stark reminder of the importance of vehicle security.
Authorities from the Memphis Police Department (MPD) explained that the suspects managed to break a side window of the car, assuming this would make their job easy. However, they didn’t count on one thing – the owner had installed a steering wheel lock. When one of the thieves attempted to cut through the lock with bolt cutters, they found their efforts totally fruitless. Not only did the steering wheel lock prove to be an effective deterrent, but it also sent the would-be thieves packing when they realized their plan was foiled.
After the failed attempt, the suspects fled the scene in a four-door Toyota Camry with tinted windows. Police are working hard to gather more clues and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to their capture. If you happen to have seen anything unusual around that time or recognize the description of the car, you’re encouraged to call the MPD’s Tillman station at 901-636-3214.
Typically, we don’t think that ordinary days will take a turn for the worse, but this incident highlights how proactively protecting our property can serve as an extra layer of security against crime. The use of a steering wheel lock — something many might overlook — could make all the difference!
Along with this incident, Memphis has seen a series of other violent crimes recently. For example, there was a tragic shooting that ended the life of an 18-year-old in the Hickory Hill area. This has left many in the community mourning a life cut short by gun violence. Meanwhile, another shooting on Poplar Avenue sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries. Such news is tough to digest and serves as a reminder about the urgency of community safety efforts.
As we process this mix of news surrounding safety and crime in our beloved Memphis community, it’s essential to support each other and stay vigilant. Knowing what to look out for and using everyday tools, like steering wheel locks, could very well contribute to making our streets a little safer.
Shifting gears — we can look forward to some lovely weather! Today’s forecast is predicting mostly sunny skies with high temperatures reaching up to 85°F. As evening draws in, folks can enjoy a mild night with temperatures dropping down to around 65°F. So whether you’re hitting the shops or enjoying a peaceful evening outdoors, the weather looks promising!
As always, let’s stay connected as a community and look out for one another. If you notice anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to speak up. After all, every effort counts in keeping our city safe.
