Memphis Residents Shocked by Daylight Car Theft

Memphis, Tennessee – It was a typical Sunday afternoon when diners at Char Restaurant on Highland Street witnessed a scene that could have been straight out of a movie. Around 2:45 p.m. on September 22, 2024, the ordinary day turned into a stunning moment as three masked men brazenly stole a 2020 Infiniti Q50 right from under their noses while patrons enjoyed their meals.

Video Footage Reveals Shocking Crime

The incident was captured on video, which was later released by the Memphis Police Department (MPD) on Wednesday. It shows the thieves using a crowbar to break the sunroof of the car before they employed an electronic key programmer to make their getaway. Reports confirm that at least one of the thieves was armed, adding to the tension of this startling event.

Witnesses inside the restaurant were understandably startled. “It happened so quickly, and we couldn’t believe it was happening right outside,” one diner shared. “It’s hard to believe they would do something like this in broad daylight.”

Police on the Hunt for Suspects

According to police reports, the suspects made their escape in two vehicles, a silver Nissan Maxima and a red Chevrolet Corvette, which are believed to be stolen as well. As of now, the MPD is actively searching for the suspects involved in this incident and is asking for the public’s help to identify them. Although one suspect was not captured on the footage, the police are hopeful that someone might have seen something that could lead to an arrest.

“We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and assist us. You can report your information anonymously by calling CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH,” a police spokesperson said.

More Stormy Weather Ahead

National Weather Service has issued a flood watch and wind advisory for the Mid-South, which will remain in effect until Saturday morning. On this cloudy day, locals can expect temperatures to reach a high of about 66°F with a chance of showers and thunderstorms rolling through later in the afternoon.

The forecast calls for winds coming from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph and a 90% chance of rain throughout the day. As the winds pick up and the rain begins, it’s a good reminder to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings, especially on the roads. The weather is expected to cool down overnight with a low around 61°F and a continued chance of showers.

Community Impact

As the community reflects on this unsettling event, folks are speaking out about the sense of vulnerability that comes with such crimes. “I’ve always felt safe here, but now I worry about leaving my car. It’s just so brazen,” said another diner at Char. “It’s a reminder that we can’t take our safety for granted.”

Memphis has always prided itself on being a welcoming and friendly city, but incidents like these shake that sense of security. With the police actively pursuing the suspects and the community being vigilant, it is hoped that justice will be served soon and that residents can resume their routines without fear.

Stay tuned for updates from local authorities regarding this case and always keep an eye on the skies as the unpredictable weather continues to roll into the area.
