This weekend, a series of violent stabbings at 16th Street Mall in Denver left the community in shock. 24-year-old Elijah Caudill has been arrested on multiple charges, including murder. The spree of attacks resulted in one fatality and several injuries, prompting authorities to enhance police presence to ensure community safety amidst rising fears related to random acts of violence.
This past weekend, a series of horrifying stabbings occurred at the bustling 16th Street Mall in Denver, leaving the community shaken. A local man, 24-year-old Elijah Caudill, is facing serious charges, including murder, after allegedly attacking four people between Saturday and Sunday.
The violence began on Saturday afternoon, around 5:10 p.m. That’s when a 49-year-old man was slashed in the face during the first incident. Thankfully, he was treated at a hospital and released shortly after.
No sooner had that attack occurred than another took place, just minutes later, around 5:17 p.m. This time, a woman was stabbed in the neck. Tragically, she did not survive, passing away early the following morning. The victim was identified as Celinda Levno, a flight attendant from Phoenix who was in Denver for a layover.
The chilling spree didn’t end there. Just before 6 p.m., a 62-year-old man suffered devastating injuries as he was stabbed in the arm and torso. He is currently fighting for his life in critical condition but is expected to survive.
The horror continued into Sunday evening at around 8 p.m., when yet another victim was stabbed near 16th and Wynkoop streets. Sadly, this person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities acted quickly, arresting Caudill late Sunday night after he allegedly fled from the scene wielding a large butcher-style knife. Denver police are investigating the incidents and have concluded that all the victims were strangers to Caudill, suggesting an unprovoked attack with an unclear motive.
What’s particularly concerning is Caudill’s history. He was released from jail in August 2023 after serving an 11-month sentence for various offenses, including assault and theft. Before this weekend’s violent escapade, he had been evaluated under a state program called Bridges of Colorado, which aims to assist individuals with significant mental health needs.
His criminal record dates back to 2019 and includes a notable incident in 2021 when he threatened a property manager with a knife. Additional charges involve attempts to steal a purse from a woman at a Target store in 2022, as well as incidents of assaulting fellow inmates while in detention.
The recent spate of violence has prompted community members to express their concerns about safety, particularly on the 16th Street Mall. In response, police have ramped up their presence in the area to reassure the public and deter any further incidents.
City officials, including the mayor, are emphasizing that such random acts of violence are exceedingly rare in Denver. Despite the community’s fear and outcry, city leaders are working hard to ensure that residents feel safe in their surroundings.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the reality that such an unexpected outbreak of violence could happen in their midst. Local authorities are urging anyone with information about the incidents to come forward, aiming to piece together the larger picture behind Caudill’s actions.
