Memphis Gear Up for Eclipse Extravaganza with Local Initiative

In a stellar organizational endeavor, the Mid-South Credit Union Orion has announced an exciting community initiative in light of the highly anticipated total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The astronomical spectacle will pass over North America, Mexico, Canada, and includes a partial view in Memphis’ own backyard – the Mid-South area.

20,000 Eclipse Glasses for Safe Viewing

As part of its initiative, Orion is generously donating 20,000 safe-viewing solar eclipse glasses to various schools and community partners within the larger Memphis area. These glasses, which guarantee safe viewing of the extraordinary solar event, have been produced by local manufacturer American Paper Optics based in Bartlett, a globally recognized leader in the production of 3D paper eyewear and protective solar eclipse glasses.

Daniel Weickenand, CEO at Orion, expressed his enthusiasm over the initiative, “This is another great opportunity for us to support local business by purchasing these glasses from American Paper Optics, in Bartlett, while also supporting teachers and students in our community.”

Memphis’ Moment and The Importance of Safety

Residents and particularly students of Memphis are set for a thrilling few minutes on the day of the eclipse, with the peak moment expected at approximately 1:55 p.m. At this time, the eclipse will near its totality, with the sun being an estimated 97% obscured by the moon-phase.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), safety is paramount when observing a total solar eclipse, as looking directly at the Sun without appropriate protection is highly unsafe, bar the brief total phase. The donated viewing glasses will ensure safe viewing for students across the community, while also providing an invaluable opportunity for experiential learning outside the classroom.

Communities and Companies in Celebration

In true celebratory spirit, Orion plans to conduct an eclipse viewing party for students and staff at Idlewild Elementary. Orion supports over 10 schools within the Memphis area throughout the year by engaging its employees in various capacities – from volunteering as test proctors, providing financial literacy, reading to students, to even serving as field trip chaperones. This latest donation caters to Orion’s core responsibility of uplifting and supporting the communities it serves, all while ensuring the solar event can be shared and enjoyed safely by all.
