MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It’s a cloudy day here in Memphis, with a chance of rain throughout the day. The temperature is expected to reach a high of 71°F later, with winds blowing in from the south. So if you’re out and about today, don’t forget your umbrella! But despite the dreary weather, there’s a more serious matter that’s captured the community’s attention.
In a shocking turn of events, a Memphis woman has been accused of stealing over $100,000 from her very own aunt, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. This unsettling story, confirmed by the Memphis Police Department (MPD), has left many residents shaking their heads in disbelief.
The victim, a 79-year-old woman, sold her property on Stone Manor Road for an impressive $142,402 back in January 2023. Unfortunately, her niece, 50-year-old Dana Dockery, who held power of attorney over her aunt’s finances, is said to have drained the entire amount in just five short months.
According to police reports, only a fraction of that money – less than $30,000 – actually made its way to Apple Grove, a living facility designed for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, where the elderly woman was residing. The rest? Well, it seems that Dockery systematically funneled the money into three accounts that she solely owned through a series of wire transfers and cashier’s checks, ultimately leading to a staggering loss of $114,507 for her aunt.
As a result of these shocking allegations, Dockery has been charged with financial exploitation of an elderly/vulnerable person and theft of merchandise amounting between $60,000 and $250,000. The situation is deeply disturbing, highlighting a serious case of betrayal within a family.
As you can imagine, the people of Memphis are just as outraged as we are. Many have taken to social media to voice their disbelief about the situation, wondering how someone could do such a thing to a family member. “This is just shameful and heartbreaking,” said one local resident. “I can’t believe she could take advantage of her own aunt like that.”
This case is not the only troubling news coming out of Memphis. A few other incidents have been drawing attention lately. For instance, there was vandalism at the Old Daisy Theater, with police reviewing surveillance footage to identify the culprits. Additionally, the Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner made it clear that there will be consequences for a couple of deputy jailers facing charges for smuggling drugs into the facility. And in an alarming event, a mother expressed her outrage after a Southaven police officer allegedly pointed a stun gun at her nine-year-old son!
To add to the cloudy skies and the sad news, a man was arrested for attempted second-degree murder after a shooting incident at a gas station in Collierville. With so many things happening around, it feels like Memphis is facing quite the storm, both literally and figuratively.
It’s certainly a complicated time in our city, filled with heartwarming stories and heartbreaking betrayals. As the community absorbs the news of this incredible breach of trust, many hope for justice for the elderly woman and peace for her family. As more information comes to light, it’s clear that Memphis will be keeping a close eye on these unfolding events.
As we weather this storm together, let’s remember to look out for our neighbors and loved ones – after all, community support is what we do best around here!
