If you’ve been keeping an eye on the latest developments around town, you might have heard some exciting news coming out of Memphis. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is making strides to expand his company, xAI, right here in the Bluff City. The company has just secured a deal that will significantly increase its presence in the area, and folks are buzzing about what this could mean for Memphis.
Recently, CTC Property, LLC, which is linked to xAI, received the green light from The Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County to lease an impressive chunk of land. The lease, approved during a special meeting, allows Musk’s company to use over 550 acres in Southwest Memphis for the next 21 years at an initial rate of $1.65 million each year. Now, the first year is a freebie in terms of rent, but after that, there’s a scheduled annual increase of 2.5%. It’s a hefty sum for sure, but the impact they hope to create is what has city officials excited. Joann Massey, the president and CEO of EDGE, emphasized the importance of this venture. She said, “This is a catalyst for growth for moving our city forward. This is a big investment.”
So, what’s going to happen on that vast piece of land? Well, the details are still a bit hazy. A representative from CTC Property, LLC, along with xAI, didn’t provide specifics about their plans during the announcement. However, it’s clear that this site, located near the old Electrolux facility which is now home to the supercomputer, is set for some action. Brent Mayo, who is involved with both companies, mentioned that they want to engage with local businesses and public schools, highlighting their aspirations to connect more deeply with the community. “The biggest thing for me is to try to understand what happens in and around the community to help build on that community,” he shared. This focus on community engagement has many residents hopeful.
However, not everyone is on board with the expansion. Keshaun Pearson, president of Memphis Community Against Pollution, expressed serious reservations about aligning with Musk and his supercomputer plans, which could consume a staggering 150 mega watts of electricity—enough to power around 100,000 homes in the area! Pearson cautioned that this rapid decision-making process may bypass essential scrutiny and beneficial practices meant to ensure community safety. “They continue to move forward with different processes and escape a lot of the scrutiny that’s recognized as beneficial to make sure communities are safe,” he stated, raising valid points that residents should consider.
As the community awaits more information, updates on the xAI project will be delivered to city council and county commission meetings in due time. In September, it was even announced by the Shelby County Health Department that an air-monitoring station would be established near the xAI site. This relatively proactive measure hints at the authorities’ recognition of the need to keep an eye on environmental factors as this ambitious project unfolds.
So, there you have it, Memphis! With the expansion of xAI in our city, there are both exciting opportunities and lingering questions that need addressing. As plans roll out, let’s hope for a future that not only boosts our economy but also prioritizes community well-being. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops!
