In the vibrant city of Memphis, the atmosphere is buzzing with the passion and dedication of the Mid-South Latino Chamber of Commerce. Since its inception in 2017, this organization has played a pivotal role in supporting locally-owned Latin businesses throughout the metro area. Angela Trillo, the chamber’s President, passionately shared the vision that drives their mission.
“Even though the mission is very important, the vision is really the ultimate goal for everyone,” Trillo explained. Over the years, the chamber has become a vital link, fostering relationships within the Mid-South’s Latino community. Trillo believes that by erasing barriers and focusing on common aspirations, the community can prosper in this beautiful city. “I believe if we erase the line and we understand that we are just a whole trying to accomplish the same purpose which is reaching our dreams and goals, that’s how we can move forward,” she emphasized.
At the heart of the chamber’s function is the aim to amplify the presence of Hispanic-owned businesses in the city. Trillo described how this often begins with a simple conversation. “Building and bonding relationships for the betterment of both of them,” she said, highlighting the importance of networking. “They can be from two totally different industries, but you always learn from everyone if you’re willing to learn.” The chamber’s role is to ensure that these connections evolve into lasting partnerships, creating a chain of support that uplifts the entire community.
Throughout the year, the Latino Chamber hosts events that provide opportunities for members to engage with local leaders and businesses. Earlier this year, they held a gathering with the city’s mayor, where attendees could express their needs and concerns directly. “Part of the luncheon is always opening up for questions,” Trillo mentioned. “We let our audience speak out. Asking what are you doing on this and what are you doing on that.” This open dialogue is key to addressing the community’s needs effectively.
As the chamber steps into its eighth year, Trillo acknowledges that there are significant challenges ahead. “Our biggest task at hand comes down to providing recognition and opportunity for the fastest-growing demographic in the country,” she stated. According to Trillo, the Latino community is diverse, comprising not just business owners but also educators, engineers, and numerous professionals who contribute to society in valuable ways. “We are much more than small business owners or students,” she insisted, stressing the importance of honoring all achievements.
To further support the Latino community, Trillo has recently launched a nonprofit organization called “Amigo”, dedicated to providing additional resources tailored to their needs. This initiative aims to strengthen community ties and enhance the resources available to Latinos in the Mid-South area.
As the Mid-South Latino Chamber of Commerce continues on its journey, the focus remains clear: empowering individuals and businesses while celebrating the richness of diversity in Memphis. Trillo and her team are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives and talents. The future is indeed bright, and with continued effort, the community will flourish together.
