MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Governor Bill Lee made a significant stop in Memphis this Tuesday, taking a firsthand look at plans for an ambitious new bridge set to replace the aging Interstate 55 bridge. This project is going to be a big deal for folks in Memphis and Arkansas, with an estimated budget of $800 million. The aim? To create a wider and safer passage that better meets today’s needs than the current structure, which has been around since 1949.
America’s River Crossing: A New Landmark
Governor Lee expressed his enthusiasm during the visit, stating, “It’s an iconic bridge for an iconic city, and it’s going to be done in a remarkably different way.” The new bridge, which is being dubbed “America’s River Crossing,” is set to be a cable-stayed structure, using modern technology familiar to seismic zones like Memphis. Will Reid, the Deputy Commissioner-Chief Engineer with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), echoed this sentiment, expressing that it would not only serve Memphis but also stand as a symbol for the entire region and country.

On the technical side, the new bridge will allow for new lanes to be incorporated into the I-55/Crump Boulevard interchange once construction is complete—likely by the year 2050. That’s quite a bit of planning, but Memphis leaders believe it’s essential for progress.

The I-55 bridge is scheduled to close for construction this upcoming weekend, starting Saturday morning at 4 a.m. and reopening by 6 a.m. on Monday. If you need to cross the river during this time, the I-40 bridge will be available as an alternate route, so keep your travel plans in mind!
