Memphis East Delights in Hiring Maurice Miller as Boys Basketball Coach
Memphis East, a renowned center for sports in the city, has eagerly ushered in an era of new leadership for its boys’ basketball team. The experienced and accomplished Maurice Miller is stepping in to take charge of the team, replacing Shelvie Rose who transitioned to First Assembly Christian School after a one-season stint at East.
Last season, East had an overall 8-19 record with a balanced win-loss ratio of 5-5 in district matches. But the school and the team look forward to a change of fortunes under the guidance of coach Miller. Miller, known for his illustrious basketball career as a Georgia Tech player from 2007-11, conveyed his excitement at the opportunity.
“I’ve always looked at East as the mountaintop. They have a great culture. I just want to give the East alumni and Binghampton representatives something to be proud of. We’re just ready to put the work in. I can’t wait to get started.” He said.
Maurice Miller’s Journey to Memphis East
In his role prior to joining East, Maurice Miller performed commendably as an assistant coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College, Memphis, for three fruitful seasons under the leadership of head coach Jerry Stephens.
In his time at Arlington, Miller led the Tigers to an impressive 45-13 overall record over two seasons, yielding a particularly notable 19-6 in the 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, their season came to an end at the Class AAA sectionals both years.
Maurice Miller isn’t a stranger to calling the shots at his alma mater, Raleigh-Egypt, where he was Head Coach of the basketball team for four seasons. He departed after driving the Pharaohs to the Class AA quarterfinals.
Awards and Career Highlights
Miller, who shone during his playing days as a 6-foot-2 guard, bagged the coveted 2007 Class AAA Mr. Basketball award and led the Pharaohs to a state runner-up finish as a sophomore. The high school graduate was recognised as the No. 2 prospect in Tennessee, No. 13 point guard in the country, and No. 75 overall prospect nationally, as per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
After a decorated high school career, Miller played with substantial contribution to the Yellowjackets, averaging 6.4 points and 3.0 assists in 115 career games. His legacy in the world of basketball and his proven coaching skills hold promise for a bright future for Memphis East boys’ basketball team.
