If you’ve ever strolled through the streets of Memphis and caught a whiff of something truly delightful, there’s a pretty good chance it’s coming from the cozy little candles crafted by our latest star, Christian Penn. This creative spirit transitioned from teaching computer programming to becoming a full-time candle maker, delighting locals with her charming scents and home design expertise.
Christian’s journey is anything but ordinary. After moving an impressive thirteen times as a child, she finally planted her roots in Memphis back in 1997. She pursued higher education at Lee University and began her career teaching in the 901 area. But when the pandemic hit, Christian found herself in need of a new outlet. And what better way to escape the chaos than by crafting stunning candles?
What began as a passion project to help cope with the restrictions of lockdown blossomed into a full-fledged business known as Penn Home & Design Co. Christian hit the local scene, selling her delightful creations at the Downtown Farmers Market and various festivals throughout the city. Now, she has a brick-and-mortar shop that combines her love for candles with her eye for home design, allowing customers to find a bit of peace and warmth all in one place.
“We’ve created a unique fusion of candles and home décor that feels inviting and welcoming,” Christian shares, emphasizing the emotional connection they seek to build with their customers. “Our goal is to make homes havens where people can retreat and recharge for whatever tomorrow brings.”
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Christian’s journey is her desire to foster community through her business. The shop allows her to host candle-pouring classes where attendees can come together, learn, and share in the fun. She loves to meet her design clients in this welcoming space, guiding them through project renderings and material selections.
Christian has a soft spot for older homes, seeing much more than just their age. “These spaces have so much history and character just waiting to be reimagined,” she says, reflecting on how she finds joy in transforming them into functional and beautiful family-centered spaces. It’s not just about aesthetics but rather creating environments that tell a story.
Among her various creations, the Coco Loco candle—combining notes of coconut milk, sandalwood, and cedar—is a standout favorite. “I pour hundreds each month and never tire of it,” she confesses. It’s clear that creating these warm and cozy fragrances is not just a business for her, but a heartfelt journey of connection with her customers.
What truly sets Memphis apart for Christian is the sense of community. “It’s like a big, small town,” she exclaims, where you can easily find a friendly face among strangers. With the support of fellow artists and her incredible church family at Mercy Hill Church in Midtown, Christian emphasizes the beautiful network of creatives in Memphis who uplift one another.
Christian shares, “In today’s fast-paced world, we often forget that less is sometimes more. Slowing down and embracing simplicity is key.” Whether she’s tending to her ducks and chickens in her backyard garden or crafting her candles, she finds peace in the little things, surrounded by the calming forces of nature.
When she’s not pouring candles, you might find Christian cooking up a storm in her kitchen or curating playlists filled with eclectic tunes. “Good food, good music, and good company—what more could you ask for?” she muses.
Christian Penn is weaving a new narrative in Memphis, one candle at a time. We can’t wait to see what she’ll create next, and we encourage everyone to pop by her shop and experience the welcoming warmth for themselves!
