Sponsor Our ArticlesIn the heart of Memphis, a troubling situation is unfolding at a Midtown apartment building that has been condemned by the city’s code enforcement agency. Despite the official designation, one resident’s battle for safe living conditions continues, raising questions about tenant rights and property management accountability.
Kevin Perkins, a resident at the troubled apartment complex on Monroe Avenue, recently returned home from a successful cancer operation, only to be met with a myriad of persistent problems. He moved into his apartment on March 15 and has since encountered serious issues, including infestations of rodents, specifically rats and mice.
“I’ve been having so many problems with them,” Perkins shared, expressing his frustration. His complaints don’t stop at pests; he has submitted numerous maintenance requests related to holes in the walls, electrical issues, and even a busted refrigerator.
This distressing situation has taken a toll on Perkins’s health. He revealed that he has had to visit the doctor more frequently than usual due to the unsafe living conditions. “I’ve been back to the doctor several times more than normal,” he explained, emphasizing the impact that these issues have had on his overall well-being.
Feeling increasingly frustrated and without answers, Perkins reached out for help. It was at this point that community advocates stepped in to investigate further. Representing the cries for help from tenants like Perkins, they approached Kaizen Realty, the property management in charge of the building, for answers about the complaints raised by one of their tenants.
Fortunately, there seems to be a glimmer of hope. After reaching out, a spokesperson from the property management promised that Perkins would receive a new refrigerator the following day, along with repairs to fix the leaks and mold issues within the apartment.
Despite the promised repairs, Perkins is considering taking more drastic action. He is currently planning to break his lease and search for a new, safer place to live. “I do have a friend of mine that said that I could stay with him as long as I needed to,” Perkins mentioned, highlighting his resourceful approach to finding a solution to his housing predicament.
The situation isn’t over just yet, as the city’s code enforcement agency is poised to get involved once more. Officials have indicated that they will be returning next week to cite the property owner again due to the failure to comply with the no occupancy notice that was placed on the building. This action underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring safe living conditions for all its residents.
As the dust settles and Perkins looks towards a new chapter, his experience serves as a reminder of the importance of tenant rights and accountability within property management. The road ahead may be uncertain, but with supportive friends and a commitment to seeking change, it appears that Perkins is ready to find a space that feels like home once more.
