Memphis Arts Initiative Enriches Lives of Young Students at Germantown Performing Arts Center

Memphis: A City That Cherishes the Arts

In Memphis, Tennessee, there’s a beautiful collaboration happening that highlights just how valuable the arts can be in our communities! Weekly, we’re diving into organizations that help make Memphis a better place, and this week, we’re shining a light on the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC) and its efforts to enrich the lives of young students.

A Partnership Blossoms

When GPAC approached Sherri Stepter, the music director and activities coordinator for Southern Ave Charter School, about partnering up, she couldn’t say yes fast enough! Sherri says, “Our school not only thrives on academics but the creative and performing arts are a very important part of our charter.” This partnership serves as a fantastic way for students to be exposed to various forms of art, something they might not otherwise experience.

Arts Made Accessible

GPAC is all about bringing high-quality artistic experiences to the community. Their Peanut Butter and Jam Family Series is particularly heartwarming as it caters specifically to introduce children to different musical genres. It’s not just about entertainment; it’s an educational journey as well! According to Parke Kennedy, the director of development at GPAC, “Kids who are exposed to the arts do better in math. They become better communicators. They’re better readers. They’re better students; they have self-discipline.”

Engagement and Fun

Recently, students got to enjoy a performance by Massey Tate, a band specializing in blues and soul. Sherri shared that this band took some familiar childhood tunes and gave them a delightful bluesy twist. Imagine kids singing along to “Wheels on the Bus” in a groovy new way! “They get to sing along. They get to get up and dance,” Sherri said, expressing how much joy these events bring. Plus, they had the chance to interact with the musicians, asking questions about the music and instruments. It was an engaging, hands-on experience that brought the community together.

Bringing Concerts to Kids

The value of the Peanut Butter and Jam Family Series cannot be overstated. As Sherri notes, “Some of them may not get a chance to go to a concert outside of their school. So it’s like we’re bringing it to them.” It’s a meaningful initiative that gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts right where they are, making it accessible and exciting!

Community Support

This program has also garnered support from local community organizations. Recently, Brown Missionary Baptist Church and the Mid-South Genesis Community Development Corporation came together to donate $1,000 to GPAC. They believe that exposing kids to the arts is essential in paving a path to success. It’s touching to see community members come together for such a noble cause!

Get Involved!

If you want to learn more about the amazing activities at Germantown Performing Arts Center, there are plenty of resources available. Furthermore, if you’re aware of any group in the Memphis area that’s making a difference and deserves recognition, there’s a way for you to nominate them!

Memphis continues to show that it truly values art and education, creating opportunities for kids to explore and thrive. The work being done by organizations like GPAC is testifying to the magic that comes from arts education. The future looks brighter when kids are offered such rich experiences!
