The University of Memphis has announced the appointment of Tim Duncan as the new Senior Deputy Athletics Director. A local alumnus with a record of success at the University of New Orleans, Duncan is set to elevate Memphis athletics with his extensive experience and deep community ties. His past achievements include leading UNO to multiple championships, enhancing facilities, and successfully navigating budget cuts during challenging times. Duncan’s return is seen as a pivotal moment for the university’s athletics program, boosting hopes for a bright future.
Exciting times are unfolding in Memphis as the University of Memphis announces the appointment of Tim Duncan as the new Senior Deputy Athletics Director. This is not just any hire; this is a homecoming for Duncan, who was born and raised in this vibrant city and has deep ties to the University of Memphis as an alumnus. After dedicating five successful years as the Vice President of Athletics and Recreation at the University of New Orleans (UNO), Duncan is set to bring his wealth of experience back to his roots.
While at UNO, Duncan achieved remarkable things that stand out bright as a sunny day on the Mississippi. Under his leadership, the UNO athletics program clinched an impressive three regular-season championships in the Southland Conference and bagged two tournament championships. Not to mention, the program had three runner-up finishes. This level of success didn’t just happen by chance; it was Duncan’s dedicated vision that drove that trajectory.
During his time there, an astonishing 205 student-athletes received All-Southland Conference honors, while 62 of those student-athletes also received All-Academic selections. It’s not only about winning but also excelling in academics, and Duncan firmly believed that you could have both!
Duncan seemed to have an eye for talent as well! He successfully hired key coaching staff, such as women’s volleyball head coach Ashley Preston and men’s basketball head coach Stacy Hollowell. These hires proved pivotal in school spirit and athletic prowess. Moreover, he didn’t just focus on people; he also put a lot of energy into facilities. Major renovations were carried out during his tenure, including upgrades to the Lakefront Arena and the Human Performance Center. These improvements have since enhanced the experience for both athletes and fans alike.
Challenges are part of any journey, and Duncan faced his fair share. He had to steer his athletic department through a tough $15 million budget deficit and a sudden 25% cut to the athletics budget, all while fighting off declining enrollment. Yet, Duncan did not back down; instead, he found innovative solutions to keep things moving forward.
One of the standout moments that brought national attention was his decision to cover the costs of senior spring sport scholarships during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, amounting to over $200,000. This heartfelt approach made UNO the first institution in Louisiana to support their spring athletes in such a generous way.
As Tim Duncan returns to Memphis, his experience is expected to significantly shape the future of the university’s athletics program. Described as a “special opportunity” for him, the decision to join his alma mater comes at a promising time. His familiarity with the local community and his track record of success gives everyone plenty of hope for an exciting future in University of Memphis athletics.
In a nutshell, Duncan’s arrival back in Memphis is more than just filling a position; it’s about raising the bar on what athletics can achieve at the University. Students, athletes, and fans alike are buzzing with enthusiasm as they anticipate what’s to come!
