Memphis has always been a city filled with rich flavors and vibrant culinary scenes, but its food options have been traditionally dominated by the beloved Southern barbecue. Recently, however, it has welcomed a new and exciting addition to its street eats: Chi Phi Food Truck. Owned by the dynamic husband-and-wife duo, Aubrey Hampton and Lamar Dales, this food truck is on a mission to bring authentic tastes of Chicago and Philadelphia to Memphis.
Aubrey and Lamar moved to Memphis about three years ago. Despite their enthusiasm for the new city, they soon found themselves missing the unique flavors of their hometowns. “I was craving Chicago-style hot dogs,” Aubrey reminisced. Lamar, on the other hand, struggled to find a genuine Philly cheesesteak in Memphis.”
That craving turned into inspiration, and Chi Phi was born, providing a lovely blend of culinary traditions that highlight their roots. However, when they first conceptualized the food truck, Aubrey had her doubts. “I wasn’t sure about the concept because Memphis traditionally is more geared toward the Southern barbecue and Southern meals,” she confessed. But the couple decided to take a leap of faith. “I think having something new and fresh has been great for the city,” she added.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit to Chi Phi should definitely be on your to-do list. The truck’s menu proudly boasts items like the classic Chicago-style hot dog, loaded with toppings like neon relish, onions, mustard, and a pickle spear. And for those cheesesteak aficionados, Chi Phi serves up generously stuffed sandwiches with thinly sliced steak and gooey cheese, sure to make any Philadelphian feel right at home.
The menu doesn’t stop there; the couple also takes great pride in offering dishes that celebrate both cities, blending flavors in new ways. Their inventive approach keeps things fresh and exciting, satisfying cravings while giving folks a unique twist on familiar favorites.
The reception from the Memphis community has been overwhelmingly positive. The local food lovers have enthusiastically embraced Chi Phi, eager to try something different. “People have been really supportive, and we love seeing how their faces light up when they take their first bite,” Aubrey said, clearly excited about the community engagement.
Chi Phi Food Truck frequently appears at various food festivals, community events, and local businesses, making it easy for anyone to get their hands on those delicious hot dogs and cheesesteaks. With the presence of Chi Phi, the people of Memphis can now delight in the flavors of Chicago and Philadelphia without having to leave their hometown.
Both Aubrey and Lamar want to be part of the Memphis community beyond just serving food. “We plan to support local initiatives and engage with the community,” Lamar expressed. They believe it’s vital for their business to have a local impact and create connections beyond just the food they serve.
As Chi Phi continues to grow, the pair remains dedicated to sharing their love of food and culture with their new home. By doing so, they are helping Memphis diversify its culinary scene and celebrating what makes each city unique, all while satisfying the cravings of locals and newcomers alike.
If you find yourself in Memphis and have a hankering for something a bit different, make sure to track down Chi Phi Food Truck. Indulge in their authentic Chicago hot dogs and Philadelphia cheesesteaks—you just might find your new favorite meal in this warm and welcoming city!
