MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It was supposed to be a special night out for a couple in downtown Memphis, but what started as a romantic celebration quickly turned into a frustrating incident that left them feeling violated and helpless.
The couple was enjoying their third anniversary at the Malco Power House Theater when their movie experience was suddenly disrupted. “While we were in the movies, we got confronted by security. They asked us to come outside and said that our vehicle had been broken into,” the victim recounted, still in disbelief over the turn of events.
But unfortunately, it wasn’t just their vehicle that had fallen victim to criminal activity. According to the victim, security informed them that their car was the first of six vehicles targeted that night. “He explained that my car had been hit first and then five other cars right after it,” the victim shared. The damage was alarming: “The back driver-side window was busted out. And like I said, they took my debit card and they rummaged through it a little bit.”
Despite the security present at the theater, the victim felt frustrated. “I was told by security that it has happened multiple times before, and that’s the reason they were there to try to prevent it, but they’re not allowed to do anything to confront them,” he explained. As the couple awaited assistance, they discovered that the Memphis Police had come and gone without detaining anyone. “They told us that they were not allowed to block them in or chase them unless they had committed a violent felony,” the victim said, expressing his disbelief. “If they’re not allowed to do that, then there’s no point in kind of even really being there the police for a reason.”
As the night wore on, the couple faced yet more frustration. The victim revealed, “Now he says his calls to the police to get an update on the case have gone unanswered.” Even after the thieves attempted to use his debit card at a gas station, and he promptly called the police, he felt little support. “I’ve called three times, and all three times been told that an investigator has still not been put on the case. It’s waiting for approval. And I just, I want something done.”
A police report noted that security officers and the victim witnessed two vehicles pull into the lot: a black Infiniti and a red Nissan, both without tags. One suspect exited and began breaking into several cars. Allegedly, when confronted, he responded with cursing. In total, six vehicles were reported burglarized, along with stolen items including a handgun and a Taser.
“It’s a bad feeling to know that I can’t even take my fiancée out on a date without something happening,” the victim lamented. In an attempt to gather evidence, he sought video footage from the theater but learned that such material could only be released to a police investigator.
A spokesperson for the police department acknowledged that their investigation is ongoing. They clarified policy regarding vehicle pursuits, indicating that such actions are strictly prohibited for non-violent felonies, traffic violations, or misdemeanors. This has left victims feeling helpless and questioning the efficacy of the police’s presence in such situations.
As the investigation continues and the victims await answers, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities people face even during what should be joyous occasions. It raises important questions about safety and security in popular urban areas, especially for those simply looking to enjoy a night out.
