Is Memphis About to Set a Record for Driest October Ever?

Hey there, Memphis! If you’ve stepped outside this month, you might have noticed something a little strange about our weather. October has arrived, and with it, we usually expect a bit of rain to help us transition into the fall season. But this year, it’s been quite the opposite! It seems like the October sunshine has come out to stay, leaving us with a remarkable dry spell.

What’s the Verdict on This Dry October?

So far, we’re nearing the end of October and the area has recorded **absolutely no rain**! That’s right, we received over 9 inches of rain in September, which made it feel like our yards and gardens were practically swimming. Yet, here we are in October, with not a single drop falling from the sky. If things don’t change soon, we are on track to have the **driest October on record** for Memphis! In fact, the last time we had an October without rain was way back in **1963**, and before that, no October has managed a zero-rainfall status since records began in **1872**. Can you believe that?

Will We See Any Rain Before the Month Ends?

Now, before you start worrying about our plants and the beautiful fall colors we enjoy, meteorologists are tracking a couple of chances for rain as we approach the month’s end. However, they are saying that these upcoming chances are looking to be quite insignificant. So, if nothing changes, we might just find ourselves with this incredible dry record to talk about for years to come!

Warmth is Not Quite a Fling

As if the dry weather wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows, we’re also feeling a bit of extra warmth lately. The temperatures in our fair city are set to remain well above average as we head into the final days of October. Highs are predicted to soar into the **low to mid-80s**, flirting with record levels by the end of the week. Specifically, on **Friday, October 25th**, we’re looking at a high of **86°F**! This temperature would tie the previous record set back in **2000**. It’s definitely not how we usually think of the end of October, is it?

A Strange Pattern for Fall

This unusual weather pattern isn’t just confined to Memphis. In fact, a large part of the United States seems to be experiencing some kind of warmth as well. So while we may be taking in the sunshine after what felt like an endless rainy September, we can also take a moment to appreciate the quirky weather patterns we see this season.

What Does This Mean for Us?

As we wrap up October, some of you may be wondering what these trends could mean for our fall activities and celebrations. Well, for now, it looks like pumpkins might stay dry and happy! However, if you’re planning any outdoor events, you might want to consider leaving the umbrellas at home and soaking in the sun instead. Just be on the lookout for that elusive rain that may or may not make an appearance.

Whether we end up setting a record for the driest October or just enjoy these warm days, one thing is certain: it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy everything our lovely city has to offer during this beautiful season. So grab your sunglasses, maybe a light jacket for the evening, and soak it all in, Memphis!
