In the vibrant city of Memphis, where the rhythm of life beats with diversity and opportunity, stories of dreams coming true are woven into the fabric of the community. One such inspiring tale belongs to Ariday Acosta, a remarkable first-generation college graduate who has transformed her aspirations into reality with the unwavering support of the University of Memphis.
Ariday’s journey began in a household where higher education was always viewed as a monumental goal. With neither of her parents attending college after immigrating to the United States, Ariday faced a unique set of challenges as she charted her path. But with a heart full of ambition and resilience, she found her way to the University of Memphis, where she discovered the support that would help her thrive.
Thanks to the Office of First-Generation Student Success and the Equal Chance for Education (ECE) scholarship, Ariday took the leap of faith, moving 79 miles away from home. “Without this program and the University of Memphis, I wouldn’t have been able to walk across the stage at graduation,” she reflects, her eyes shining with pride as she recalls the hurdles she conquered.
Moving to a new city and adjusting to college life was no easy feat. Ariday encountered a series of challenges that tested her self-worth and determination. “It was a significant change, especially as the first in my family to attend university. I found myself questioning whether I was pursuing the right degree and if I truly belonged there,” she admitted.
However, when the going got tough, Ariday was not alone. The Office of First-Generation Student Success played a crucial role in her journey. Under the mentorship of Jacki Rodriguez, the office’s director, she navigated the complexities of higher education with confidence. “Jacki helped me understand my purpose from the moment I committed,” Ariday said. These monthly check-ins became a beacon of hope, guiding her through the stormy seas of college life.
Despite the tough moments, Ariday flourished at the University of Memphis, showing her unwavering dedication by getting involved in various campus activities. She proudly carried home the Spirit of the Tiger award for two consecutive years, a testimony to her leadership and commitment to her peers.
Her roles included serving as a campus tour guide, the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Alpha Delta Pi, Chapter President of Alpha Delta Pi, and Vice President of the Panhellenic Council. Ariday’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community shone through her endeavors, showcasing her growth as a leader and advocate.
To those still standing at the crossroads, especially undocumented and first-generation students who grapple with uncertainty, Ariday offers a heartfelt message: “It is possible. Keep pushing yourself beyond those ‘impossible’ limits. The journey may be challenging, but perseverance can break barriers.” She believes in leaving a legacy at the University of Memphis that shatters misconceptions about first-generation students.
As she reflects on her journey, the words of her father ring in her ears: “Yo Soy, Yo Puedo, es facil, y lo voy a lograr” (I am, I can, it’s easy, and I will achieve it). This uplifting motto embodies her experience and resonates with many others who share a similar background.
The University of Memphis continues to stand as a beacon of hope, offering countless opportunities for every aspiring student. With life-changing mentorship and hands-on learning experiences, UofM is dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams, just as it did for Ariday Acosta.
So if you’re ready to take the next step toward your future, the University of Memphis is waiting to assist you on your journey. This is a place where dreams are not just born but nurtured and realized. Start your adventure today!
