Memphis Races Toward a Brighter Future with St. Jude Marathon Weekend

MEMPHIS, TN – This Saturday is set to be a spectacular day for Memphis as the St. Jude Memphis Marathon takes off, expecting around 22,500 runners to hit the streets of Downtown and Midtown. The enthusiasm in the air is palpable as the city gears up for an event that means so much more than just a race.

Funding Lifesaving Treatments

Richard C. Shadyac Jr., the President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, was all smiles at the press conference held on December 5, 2024. Shadyac expressed the heart of the event perfectly, saying, “Every day as they lace up and stretch out, St. Jude Heroes know they have thousands of patients right there with them.”

Shadyac further highlighted the impact of local efforts, stating, “This is truly Memphis at its best. Your commitment to this mission is seen and felt locally as it saves and impacts lives globally.” It’s a powerful reminder of how the running community steps up not just to conquer personal goals, but to uplift those in need.

New Leadership, New Heights

In exciting news, ALSAC has announced new leadership as well! Samantha Maltin from Sesame Workshop is stepping in as the chief marketing and brand officer. Meanwhile, Ankur Jain from Whole Foods will take on the title of the nonprofit’s first chief data and analytics officer. This wave of fresh leadership indicates a promising future for the organization and its mission to cure pediatric cancer.

A Concrete Future: New Building Plans

There’s also progress on the construction front. A new tower is slated to go up at the intersection of A.W. Willis Avenue and Danny Thomas Boulevard. The site currently holds three buildings that are set to be demolished to make way for this important project, signifying a robust commitment to expanding St. Jude’s capabilities and services.

Preparing for Race Day

As Saturday approaches, the energy is building. Runners from all walks of life are preparing, with many opting to come out and cheer for their family and friends, while others are coaching themselves through last-minute training sessions. It promises to be a vibrant scene filled with determination, excitement, and an overwhelming sense of community spirit.

From early-morning stretches to crossing the finish line, every aspect of the marathon represents hope and resilience. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness how the city comes together for a cause bigger than any single person’s effort.

A Call to Action

For those wanting to get involved or simply follow along, the marathon weekend is not just about the runners. Everyone can contribute in their own small way, whether cheering from the sidelines, volunteering, or making a donation. Every little bit helps in the fight against childhood cancer, and the ongoing mission of St. Jude is supported by community participation.

Join the Conversation

If you’d like to share your thoughts or experiences regarding the marathon or St. Jude, there are opportunities to do so through various channels. Joining in on the conversation is encouraged, and it’s a great way to connect with others who are equally passionate about this important cause.

So lace up your shoes, put on your best St. Jude gear, and get ready to cheer on the thousands of runners this Saturday! In Memphis, the spirit of community runs deep, and this marathon is just one more way it shows.
