Memphis Prepares for COGIC’s Holy Convocation Amidst Hotel Accommodation Challenges

Memphis Gears Up for COGIC’s Holy Convocation Amid Hotel Space Concerns

As October winds down, Memphis is busy getting ready for the Church of God in Christ’s (COGIC) annual Holy Convocation, a gathering that brings in over 30,000 attendees to the city. However, this year’s preparations come with a bittersweet twist. The future of the convocation in Memphis hangs in the balance due to some challenges surrounding hotel accommodations.

Each year, the convocation generates approximately $35 million for the local economy. With that kind of financial boost, it’s no wonder that city leaders and church officials are keen to keep this treasured tradition alive in the Bluff City. Yet, recent discussions have revealed that the availability and quality of hotel spaces are becoming pressing issues.

City’s Strong Move to Secure the Future

In early October, the city announced its purchase of the Sheraton Hotel, a strategic move aimed at ensuring quality accommodations for conventioneers while simultaneously protecting a $200 million investment for upgrades to the convention center. Bishop Brandon Porter, who is a part of COGIC’S General Board, expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, “This could be a game changer for us. If that hotel meets our needs as a convention hotel, it’s great news.”

But there’s a caveat. Bishop Porter highlighted that Memphis still needs to improve and expand its dining and lodging options. “We need more space downtown,” he said, acknowledging that while the Sheraton is a step in the right direction, it isn’t a complete solution. The peak season for hotel bookings in Memphis runs from April to July, unlike November when the convocation occurs, which exacerbates the issue of pricey accommodations.

Rising Costs and Competition

Hotel prices during the convocation period can vary dramatically, sometimes reaching as high as $399 a night. Porter voiced concerns that such steep rates could be burdensome for congregants traveling from afar. “We must be more considerate of our people,” he expressed. “Our attendees come here each year, and we want to make sure they can find affordable and welcoming places to stay.”

Moreover, COGIC leadership is acutely aware of the competitive landscape. Cities across the country are vying for the honor to host the Holy Convocation, so getting it right this year is crucial. “Several cities have expressed interest in being the new location for the convocation,” Porter noted. However, he also emphasized the commitment of COGIC’s presiding bishop and local officials to keep the event in Memphis.

Upcoming Community Event

As the community gears up for the convocation, COGIC will be hosting a special outreach event called “Christmas in November” at the Greater Community Temple Church on Winchester this Saturday, November 1. The event aims to provide resources and job opportunities to those in need, embodying the church’s appreciation for its community while reaffirming its purpose beyond just gatherings.

As the clock ticks toward this beloved event, many in Memphis remain hopeful that with city support, improvements, and the dedication of local leaders, the Holy Convocation will continue to flourish in the city where it all began. For now, all eyes are on how the preparations unfold, and if Memphis can rise to the occasion and keep its cherished convocation.

As Halloween approaches, we’re also anticipating some exciting, albeit breezy weather. Keep an eye out for a forecasted high of 85°F with a slight chance of rain. A lovely reminder that as seasons change, so too do the opportunities for renewal and community.
