In a disturbing incident that has left the Memphis community shaken, a pregnant woman was assaulted in her own apartment during a home invasion on the night of February 25, 2025. The unwanted intrusion took place at the Whispering Pines Apartments on Dwight Road, setting off a chain of events that no one could have predicted.
The Memphis Police Department received a distress call around 11 p.m., when the victim, who was already 36 weeks pregnant, realized that her safety was in jeopardy. She described hearing a knock at her door, which was quickly followed by the alarming intrusion of five individuals who entered her living space through an unlocked door. This chilling breach of privacy soon escalated as the assailants searched for her cousin.
When the intruders discovered that her cousin was not at home, an eerie shift took place. Instead of leaving, one of them threatened the expectant mother, making it clear that their anger and frustration would be taken out on her. The group then proceeded to physically assault her, including hitting her in the head, while one of the assailants, identified as Herbert Howard, 35, directed intimidating comments toward her.
Once the assault was over, the group fled from the scene, leaving the victim in a state of shock and physical harm. Authorities sprung into action after the victim reported the assault, and investigations were promptly underway. Her courageous act of reporting what happened has been crucial for the police in tracking down the suspects involved in this frightening event.
Following swift actions by the police, Herbert Howard was arrested on March 11, 2025. He faces serious charges, including Aggravated Burglary and Assault. As of now, the specific bail amount for Howard has yet to be determined, and he is scheduled for a court appearance on the morning of March 12. It remains to be seen what the outcome of these legal proceedings will be, but the Memphis community is watching closely, as this incident has raised questions about safety within their neighborhoods.
In a related development, another suspect linked to this disturbing incident, Jamia Howard, age 19, was arrested the following day, on February 26. She faces the same charges as her older counterpart, namely Aggravated Burglary and Assault. Following her arrest, she has been released on a $5,000 bond. Unfortunately, as of now, her mugshot is not available to the public.
This shocking episode serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the unfortunate circumstances that can happen right in the comfort of our homes. Residents of Memphis are advised to remain vigilant and ensure their doors and windows are locked, especially at night, to avoid unwelcome intrusions that could lead to dangerous situations.
The growing concern over safety in the area has sparked conversations among locals about community unity and the importance of looking out for one another. The Memphis Police Department has urged anyone who may have witnessed this home invasion or has additional information to come forward. Together, the community can help prevent further incidents and promote safety for everyone.
As the court date approaches for both Herbert and Jamia Howard, many in the community hope for justice to be served and for the brave victim to recover from this traumatic experience. Our thoughts are with her as she navigates this difficult time, and we stand together in hoping for a safer and more supportive environment for all Memphis residents.
