Sponsor Our ArticlesMemphis, Tennessee, marked a significant moment on Monday as the beloved Rum Boogie Cafe welcomed a new chapter in its storied history. The famous venue celebrated the end of an era with a heartfelt ceremony honoring Preston Lamm, who has been a key player in the club’s success for an impressive 40 years. A crowd of local dignitaries and fans gathered at Rum Boogie to show gratitude and reminisce about the impact Lamm has had on Beale Street and the vibrant music scene.
Back in the day, Lamm was a practicing CPA when he received an unexpected offer from Beale developer John Elkington. He was asked to take over the Rum Boogie Cafe, a decision that would pave the way for a new era of live music and down-home southern cooking. Looking back, Lamm reflected on the challenging landscape of Beale Street in those early days, stating, “Everybody on Beale had failed at that time. This was the second phase, and we wanted to make sure it worked ‘cause it was closer to the river.” His vision was clear – he wanted to create a commonplace for down-home cookin’ and down-home blues, staying true to Memphis’s rich heritage.
Over the years, Lamm became synonymous with the pulse of Beale Street. He expanded his reach by owning several clubs, but it was his work at Rum Boogie that truly solidified his legacy. The club has become a pillar of live entertainment, offering performances seven days a week, 365 days a year. The sounds of live blues intertwined with the aroma of mouth-watering Southern delicacies have drawn music lovers from all walks of life to this iconic establishment.
On that fateful Monday, the atmosphere was thick with nostalgia as friends, business associates, and supporters came together to celebrate not only Lamm’s achievements but also the deep culture of Memphis. With laughter and stories shared, it was a true testimony to the bond Lamm has forged within the community. His passion for the job was evident as he expressed, “We want to be all about Memphis.” His commitment and enthusiasm have inspired many to appreciate the rich music and food culture that makes the city unique.
As one door closes, another opens, and Lamm’s legacy is in good hands. Management of Rum Boogie Cafe has officially transitioned to Jim Losapio, Lamm’s longtime right-hand man. The crowd couldn’t have been more thrilled, recognizing that the new management would uphold the same standards of excellence that Lamm established. Many expressed excitement to see how Jim will take the club into the future, ensuring that the spirit of Rum Boogie lives on. The support from the community is palpable, with hopes that there will be many more decades of music and joy ahead.
For those who have come to love this iconic spot, Rum Boogie is more than just a club; it’s a knitting together of people’s stories, a stage for dreams, and a heart pulsating with the blues. As the club dives into this new chapter, it’s clear that the combination of Lamm’s past influence and Jim’s fresh perspective will keep the blues flowing long into the night.
In Memphis, the beat goes on, and though Preston Lamm may be stepping back, his heart remains embedded deeply in the fabric of Beale Street. Cheers to a future ripe with music, laughter, and unforgettable memories!
