Memphis, Tenn. – The city is buzzing with news about a recent incident at one of its most prestigious hotels, The Peabody Memphis. It’s hard to believe, but a former employee is facing serious charges for allegedly swiping a hefty sum of money from the establishment.
Meet Denise Curry, a 43-year-old former payroll manager who once played a critical role in the hotel’s operations for an impressive 22 years. Despite her long history with the Peabody, Curry has now found herself on the wrong side of the law, facing charges for theft of property connected to a staggering $81,841 that has gone missing from the hotel.
The drama began when the hotel director confronted Curry after discovering that $24,009 was unaccounted for. According to the affidavit, this missing sum was neither logged into the hotel’s records nor deposited into the bank, raising immediate red flags. As if that weren’t enough, through further investigation, it was discovered that Curry had placed two separate $10,000 change orders open to the bank which, incredibly, never made it back. Instead, the hotel lost a total of $20,000 that should have been safely returned to the bank!
But that’s not all; Curry is also accused of lifting around $22,000 from the office vault. It’s enough to leave anyone speechless! The situation became graver when, during the investigation process, Curry decided to leave her job and didn’t bother returning, leaving behind her purse and personal belongings.
The plot thickened when, on July 22, the director received a puzzling text from Curry. She claimed that a deposit of $16,252 was left on her desk and essentially implied that the situation was under control. However, this turned out to be another twist in the tale as an examination of the bag found only $252 inside. Talk about a shocking revelation!
After piecing together the evidence, the hotel director knew he had to take action. A report was officially filed with the local police on July 30. The investigation continues, but the damage has already been done—the Peabody Memphis is now faced with a cloud over its illustrious reputation.
Curry is currently out on bail, having been released on a $20,000 bond. The community is anxiously waiting to see how this curious case will unfold in court, but one thing is for sure: employees and guests at The Peabody are probably feeling a bit on edge, wondering how could such a breach of trust happen in a hotel that holds such a special place in the hearts of so many Memphians.
This shocking incident serves as a strong reminder that trust is a fragile commodity in the world of business. Hotels and other enterprises must take proactive steps to safeguard their finances and ensure that layers of accountability are in place. For guests and patrons, it’s a good lesson on the unexpected things that can happen, even at the most reputable establishments.
As this story develops, we’ll be keeping an eye on the ongoing proceedings and will bring you any updates. Stay tuned, Memphis! In the meantime, let’s hope for a swift resolution to this surprising chapter in The Peabody’s storied history.
