Memphis Local Falls Victim to SNAP Benefits Theft, Loses Nearly $1K to Fraudsters

Memphis Local Resident Loses Nearly $1K in SNAP Benefits to Thieves

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Life took an unexpected turn for a Mid-South SNAP benefits recipient who has shared the unfortunate tale of losing nearly $1,000 worth of food stamp benefits. The woman, Rebecca Robinson, found out thieves had targeted her twice, leaving her grappling with financial challenges and questioning the security of the program designed to help those in need.

The Disconcerting Startling Discovery

On an ordinary morning of October 7, 2023, Robinson woke up and decided to check her SNAP benefits prior to making purchases on the grocery delivery service, Instacart. To her dismay, the service rejected her payment. Thinking it was a system glitch or a temporary cut-off, she rang up the customer care only to be shocked when the same incident repeated in November.

Robinson Falls Prey to Fraudster Tactics

To Robinson’s horror, when she made an inquiry with a representative, she discovered that her benefits for both October and November had been stolen without her knowledge. The representative elucidated that criminals are using various tactics to steal SNAP benefits. These include card cloning, card skimming, and phishing – a scheme where hackers pretend to be an authenticated organization to extract personal information.

“It was supposed to be a temporary situation so, not receiving them, it just threw everything into a tailspin as far as finances and having to cover other bills as well as the food cost.” Robinson exclaimed, airing her woes and the troubles she went through due to this ordeal.

Steps to Protect SNAP Benefits – DHS Advice

The Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) advises recipients of such benefits to protect their account details with strict vigilance. Regular PIN changes, diligent balance checks, and maintaining privacy around personal information can help reduce the chances of falling victim to such crimes.

Despite following these best practices, Robinson, unhappily, still fell prey to the devious schemes of the criminals. The theft has put her in a tough spot as she struggles to meet her basic needs and handle unexpected expenses. She stated, “It’s a lot, just meeting your basic needs, paying bills, and then having to incorporate unexpected expenses. It’s been difficult.”

Waiting for Justice

Robinson reported the incidents months ago to the fraud department of DHS and is still waiting to recoup her benefits or simply hear back from them. The lack of a swift response has left her feeling ignored and anxious about financial stability. The ordeal serves as a reminder to all SNAP benefits recipients of the critical importance of safeguarding their benefits, information, and enabling strengthened security systems. In the meantime, Robinson hopes for a fair resolution, sending a message loud and clear to the criminal minds – “Get a job and leave other people alone.”
