Memphis Enchants Audiences with Stravinsky's Opera 'The Rake's Progress'

Memphis Hosts Captivating Opera Performance

Memphis lit up with the enchanting sounds of opera on Friday, November 22, as the University of Memphis teamed up with Opera Memphis to present the mesmerizing production of The Rake’s Progress. This opera, composed by the brilliant Igor Stravinsky in 1951, is based on a gripping libretto crafted by the distinguished British-American poet W. H. Auden. Set in the bustling backdrop of London, it tells a tale as old as time: a young man tempted by fame and fortune, only to lose himself in the process.

A Journey of Temptation

At the center of this dramatic narrative is Tom Rakewell, a charming young man who inherits a substantial fortune. However, instead of returning home to his sweet girlfriend, Anne Trulove, he is swept away by the dazzling and sometimes perilous life that London offers. Tom is accompanied by his enigmatic and devilish companion, Nick Shadow, who urges him to chase glory at all costs. And we all know what they say—with great power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, Rakewell seems to misplace that latter part!

Throughout the opera’s three enthralling acts, audiences witnessed the gripping decline of Tom Rakewell as he slowly but surely loses his grip on reality. The show dives deep into the themes of madness and delusion, showcasing just how easy it is to stray from one’s morals in pursuit of what seems like success.

Behind the Scenes

The performers poured their hearts into this captivating production. University student Caroline Davis, an ensemble member, shared her thoughts on the experience. “My experience working in collaboration with Opera Memphis and the school of music was fulfilling,” she remarked. “Stravinsky’s Rake’s Progress is a difficult show to perform, especially because of the dark themes.” Davis continued, “I feel that the director made it very clear what he wanted, and my cast mates and I gave it our all to be as demented and cunning as possible. I am grateful to have been a part of this unique show.”
