Memphis Prepares for 2025 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest with $170,000 Prize Pool

Memphis Gears Up for the 2025 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

Memphis is getting fired up for one of its most beloved annual events, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Applications are now open for teams eager to showcase their grilling skills at the contest, which is set to take place from May 14 to May 17, 2025, at the picturesque Liberty Park. With a staggering cash prize purse of $170,000, it’s no wonder that grill masters from across the country are ready to bring their best recipes to the table!

Expect Excitement and Flavor

This event isn’t just about the food; it’s a celebration of Memphis culture, community, and culinary artistry. The contest features several categories, including the highly sought-after whole hog, ribs, shoulder, and a more informal entry called the Patio Porkers category, perfect for those just starting out. The competition promises tons of excitement and mouthwatering flavors for all who attend.

Judging and Sponsorships

To ensure that the judging process is both fair and thorough, Memphis in May has enlisted over 250 trained and certified judges. These judges are specially trained to recognize the nuances of BBQ, so competitors will know their dishes are in skilled hands. Major sponsorships from Cattlemen’s Barbecue Sauce, Home Depot, and Kingsford further elevate the event, adding prestige and highlighting the event’s importance.

A Look Back: Last Year’s Success

Last year’s contest saw phenomenal participation, with 129 teams competing from 22 states and even four foreign countries! The grand champion, The Shed BBQ from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, took home a cool $26,000 for their flavorful triumph. With such a reputation, it’s no surprise that attendees and competitors alike are looking forward to this event every year.

History of a Memphis Tradition

The Memphis in May barbecue contest has a rich history, having kick-started back in 1978. The involvement of the Memphis in May organization began one year prior with the famed Beale Street Music Festival, which sadly got canceled for 2024. The annual barbecue contest was previously held at Tom Lee Park but successfully transitioned to Liberty Park last year, bringing fresh energy to this cherished tradition.

What’s New This Year?

In September, the Memphis in May organization welcomed a new executive vice president, Kevin Grothe, who has been associated with the organization in various capacities, most recently as the VP of sponsorship. Under the leadership of Mack Weaver, who has been at the helm since February, the organization is looking forward to an exciting event in 2025.

Get Involved, but Don’t Wait!

Teams interested in competing should mark their calendars as the application deadline approaches on February 21, 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity for barbecuers aspiring to make a name for themselves and possibly walk away with a substantial cash prize.

Join the Fun!

For BBQ lovers and foodies, it’s not just about the competition; it’s about being part of a vibrant community that celebrates the unique flavors of Memphis. Whether you’re a contestant or an eager spectator, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest offers a fantastic chance to experience Southern hospitality at its finest.

So, gather your friends and family and get ready to celebrate one of Memphis’s cornerstone events. This could be the year you discover your new favorite BBQ joint or find inspiration for your own backyard grilling adventures!
