After-school activities are canceled, but parents should note rescheduling for the Optional Schools Fair. Enjoy the snow day, Memphis!
Hey there, Memphis! It seems we’re in for a wintry surprise as our gorgeous city is bracing for some serious snowfall this Friday, January 10. As school just got back in session for the new year, students and teachers might have to put their pencils down for a snow day!
Weather forecasts predict that we could see up to six inches of snow blanketing the area, with some isolated spots possibly reaching a whopping eight inches! If you’re wondering what that means for your travel plans, be prepared for major disruptions on the roads. This is definitely a time to stay cozy at home and enjoy some hot cocoa!
So, which schools are affected? Well, it turns out it’s quite a list! Arlington Community Schools, Bartlett City Schools, Collierville Schools, DeSoto County Schools, Germantown Municipal Schools, Lakeland Schools, Memphis-Shelby County Schools, Millington Municipal Schools, and University Schools will all be closing their doors on January 10. It’ll be a snow day across all these districts, and students will get to stay home and enjoy the winter wonderland!
But it’s not just K-12 schools that are taking a snow day. Christian Brothers University has announced that classes will be canceled for the day, while Rhodes College is taking a slightly different approach by shifting to remote work and closing the campus on both January 10 and 11. Meanwhile, the University of Memphis has decided that activities and events planned for January 10 to 12 will be canceled or postponed. Great idea to stay safe and sound!
If you’re wondering about after-school programs, Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has canceled all after-school activities for the day as well. However, YCare will be open on Thursday until 6 p.m. for those who need care before the snow hits. Just a reminder that all practices and events for the night on Thursday are also canceled, so mark your calendars!
Now, here’s a quick note for parents and students: the Optional Schools Fair has been rescheduled to take place on January 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at East High School. This fair is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the various programs and options available for students, so make sure to mark that date!
And while snowflakes may be swirling through the air, it looks like we’ll be in luck as temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend, promising to melt that beautiful snow and hopefully clear the way for a normal school day on Monday. So don’t fret too much about missing a few classes—it’s all about making snowmen and enjoying the season!
Get ready to bundle up, Memphis! It’s time to embrace the snow, have some fun, and of course, stay safe. Don’t forget to check in with your school for any updates and enjoy your unexpected break. Happy snow day, everyone!
