News Summary

Winter storms are expected to bring up to six inches of snow to Memphis on January 10, leading to widespread school closures across the area. Memphis-Shelby County Schools and several other districts have announced closures to ensure student safety. Important events have also been rescheduled. Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and stay safe during the storm.

Winter Weather Wreaks Havoc on School Schedules in Memphis

As winter storms sweep across the Mid-South, the city of Memphis is gearing up for some serious snow on Friday, January 10. Residents are being advised to prepare for potentially up to six inches of snowfall, which may lead to dangerous travel conditions and a general disruption of daily activities. With this in mind, several schools in the area are taking precautionary measures by closing their doors.

School Closures You Need to Know About

First up, the large district of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has announced that all schools and administrative buildings will be closed on January 10. This decision aims to keep students and staff safe from the hazardous weather conditions predicted for that day. Just to give parents a heads-up, MSCS also canceled all after-school and evening activities for Thursday night, but YCare will stay open until 6 p.m. on that evening for any families needing assistance.

But MSCS isn’t alone in making this tough call. Several other local school districts are also shutting down for the day:

  • Arlington Community Schools
  • Bartlett City Schools
  • Collierville Schools
  • DeSoto County Schools
  • Germantown Municipal Schools
  • Lakeland Schools
  • Millington Municipal Schools
  • University Schools

This ripple effect also touches higher education. Christian Brothers University has declared that no classes will be held on Friday, while Rhodes College will transition to remote work and close its campus on January 10 and 11.

Time to Postpone Plans

The frequent snowfall also means that some exciting upcoming events have been affected. For example, the much-anticipated Optional Schools Fair, originally scheduled for this Friday, has now been rescheduled to January 19, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at East High School. Families looking to explore school options will definitely want to keep this new date in mind!

The University of Memphis, a hub of campus activity, has made adjustments as well. They have canceled or postponed campus events and activities from January 10 through January 12, but there’s a silver lining for sports fans: the men’s basketball game against East Carolina University is still on for Saturday at 1 p.m., taking place inside FedExForum.

What to Expect Next

The impending winter weather in Memphis isn’t just about snow; it brings a lot of challenges along with it. Residents are reminded to stay safe and limit travel if possible. It’s time to stay cozy, maybe whip up some hot cocoa, and enjoy a snow day at home!

So, whether it’s a snowman-building contest or a movie marathon, it seems that Memphis will be embracing the winter weather. Kids will have an unexpected day off from school, so encourage them to enjoy the snow while it lasts!

As always, keeping informed is essential. Remember to check local updates for any changes to schedules or additional closures as this weather situation unfolds. Stay safe and warm, Memphis!
