Memphis Students Get an Unexpected Snow Day!
This just in from the beautiful city of Memphis! Students in the Memphis-Shelby County School District (MSCS) will be enjoying a surprise day off on Friday, January 10. Yes, you heard that right! Get ready for some cozy indoor activities or maybe even some fun in the snow!
Snow in the Forecast
What’s the reason for this delightful break, you ask? Well, it looks like Mother Nature is planning a little winter wonderland for us. The weather forecast is predicting a solid four to six inches of snow around much of the Memphis area, with some lucky neighborhoods possibly seeing up to eight inches! That’s enough snow to build some impressive snowmen or even sneak in a snowball fight with friends.
Cancelled Activities
In light of the anticipated weather, all MSCS schools and administrative buildings will be closed on Friday. But wait, there’s more! After-school activities and evening practices for Thursday, January 9, have also been canceled. However, if you happen to be enrolled in the YCare program, don’t fret! YCare will remain open until 6 p.m. on Thursday to accommodate those who need it.
Rescheduled Events
Before you get too lost in your snow day plans, keep in mind that some important events are getting rescheduled. The Optional Schools Fair, which is a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to explore various school options, has been pushed back to Sunday, January 19. Make a note on your calendars: this event will take place at East High School from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A Warm Weekend Ahead
As the snow blankets our city, it’s worth mentioning that temperatures are expected to warm over the weekend, paving the way for a smooth return to school on Monday. So, while kids are enjoying their day off, parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the regular school routine should resume come Monday.
Other Schools Closing
But it’s not just MSCS that’s closing its doors! Other educational institutions across the Memphis area are also joining in on the fun. Arlington Community Schools, Bartlett City Schools, and Germantown Municipal Schools will also be closed on Friday. It’s safe to say the whole area is embracing the snowy forecast.
Local Colleges Adapt to Weather Changes
Higher education isn’t immune to the snow day excitement either! Christian Brothers University has announced the cancellation of all classes for Friday, January 10. Meanwhile, Rhodes College will shift to remote work for the day, and the campus will be closed on both January 10 and 11. And don’t forget about the University of Memphis, which has canceled or postponed campus activities and events from January 10 to January 12. However, sports fans will be happy to know that the men’s basketball game scheduled for January 11 is still on!
Matter of Governance
On a more serious note, it’s important to mention that the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education is facing some scrutiny from the Shelby County commission due to ongoing issues with leadership and governance. While snow days are a reason to celebrate, there are always important matters at hand.
Stay Safe and Enjoy!
So, whether you’re hitting the slopes with friends, staying in to sip hot cocoa, or simply enjoying the magical view of white-topped trees from your window, remember to stay safe and have a great time. Here’s to hoping this snowy forecast brings plenty of joy to our Memphis community!
