After a heavy winter storm brought significant snowfall to the Mid-South, schools in Memphis and surrounding areas are reopening on January 13, 2025. While many districts are resuming classes, a few are operating on a two-hour delay or remain closed. The storm delivered record-breaking snow, prompting caution for road conditions as communities work to recover from the cold and its impact. School districts and local agencies continue to address weather-related challenges as families adapt to returning to routines amidst ongoing winter weather concerns.
Memphis is feeling a bit of a chill in the air, but that won’t stop students from heading back to the classroom! On January 13, 2025, a host of schools across the Mid-South are reopening their doors following a relentless winter storm that dumped significant snow over the region.
The Memphis Shelby County Schools District (MSCS) is ready to kick off the second semester, along with several other districts in the area. Local families can expect schools in places like Collierville, Germantown Municipal, Promise Academy, and DeSoto County to also be welcoming back students after their weather-induced break. In addition, schools in Tipton County, Crockett County, Dyer County, Lakeland, Bartlett City, Marion, and Haywood County will be back in action.
However, not all districts are ready for a full reopening. Haywood County, Marshall County, West Memphis, and Tate County school districts will be starting the day with a two-hour delay. On the flip side, Hardeman County and McNairy County schools will remain closed for January 13.
It’s no exaggeration to say that we experienced quite a winter blast recently! On January 10, a mighty winter storm graced Memphis with a hefty snow accumulation, marking an impressive 7.5 inches reported at Memphis International Airport. In nearby Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, the highest total reported was an astounding 8.3 inches!
Record-breaking snowfall has been the talk of the town, as Memphis set a new record for January 10, surpassing the prior record of 3.6 inches from 1997. With final snowfall totals still being tallied, there’s no denying that the winter whites left quite an impression.
As if the snow wasn’t enough, chilly temperatures seem to be here to stay for a while. Residents should brace themselves for highs lurking in the upper 30s and falls dipping into the 20s throughout the coming week. Yikes!
North Mississippi felt the storm’s wrath as well, with a mix of sleet, snow, and rain creating slippery conditions that no one is eager to drive through. As some of the snow starts to melt on warmer days, residents should keep an eye out for potential hazardous conditions due to water refreezing on roadways. Safety first!
Meanwhile, transportation agencies are rolling up their sleeves to tackle pothole repairs that have sprung up in the wake of all this wild winter weather. Car owners are advised to stay vigilant on the roads as crews work tirelessly to make them safer.
It’s not just schools feeling the impact; several churches in the Mid-South are opting for virtual services in light of road conditions. Staying cozy at home has never seemed more appealing!
As we navigate these cold and chaotic days, some incidents have raised concerns. A man was injured after getting struck by a car on South Mendenhall, while the community is also buzzing with reports of a shooting death and investigations across various locations in Memphis.
In Shelby County, firefighters are on high alert as they face an uptick in residential fires linked to heating issues during the frigid weather. The winter months can be a harsh time, and it’s essential for everyone to stay warm while ensuring safety at home.
So, as students and teachers gear up for a return to school after the snowstorm blast, let’s remember to stay cautious and bundled up. Here’s to hoping for warmer days ahead, but for now, let’s embrace the chill and take care of each other!
