Memphis Schools Get Roof Upgrades: Big Changes Coming!

Hey there, Memphis! Exciting news is on the horizon for our local schools as the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Board gathered on Tuesday evening to approve some much-needed infrastructure updates. Buckle up because we’re diving into the details of a transformative decision that’s going to help keep our little learners dry!

Roofing Projects Worth $13.2 Million!

As part of the meeting, the board greenlit roof replacements for several schools, totaling a hefty $13.2 million. That’s right! It’s not just a few dollars; it’s a significant cash investment into our educational infrastructure. The approved projects were packaged together under the consent agenda, which means they moved along without extensive discussion. You might say it was a quick nod to progress!

Roundup of Schools Getting Roof Makeovers

So, which schools are we talking about? Well, among the lucky ones is Bolton High School, a school with a roof that’s a whopping 32 years old! Talk about overdue! Records show that there hasn’t been a roof replacement since the school’s establishment, and this year alone, there were 17 work orders placed for roof repairs. Sounds like it’s finally getting the TLC it deserves!

Not to be left out, Treadwell Elementary and Middle School is set for an upgrade as well. Inspectors have noted that parts of their roofing are outdated by over 50 years! Imagine that! Treadwell Elementary has been standing strong for 86 years, while the Middle School has been around for 81 years. It’s high time these schools receive some serious roof love!

Legal Saga of the ‘School Board Five’

In other news from Tuesday’s board meeting, the “School Board Five”, a group of five individuals previously barred from attending board meetings, have reached a settlement. These brave folks — Rachael Spriggs, Tikeila Rucker, Amber Sherman, Damon Curry Morris, and LJ Abraham — took a stand after being restricted from accessing MSCS properties while a search for a new superintendent was ongoing. Their fight was more than personal–it was about ensuring that all community voices can be heard without any repercussions.

Tikeila Rucker expressed that their aim was to foster an environment where parents and community members can engage openly, emphasizing, “Our fight was never just about us — it was about ensuring that every community voice could be heard without fear of retaliation.” Their bravery and determination continue to inspire us all!

Upcoming Meetings to Keep an Eye On

Don’t forget, the University of Memphis Board of Trustees will be meeting for their December session on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Definitely an event to watch! And for those interested in charter trends, mark your calendars for the MSCS Charter Partnership Council meeting on December 10th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Teaching and Learning Academy. Knowledge is power!

Your Questions Matter!

If you’ve got pressing questions about education or issues affecting our kiddos, there’s someone who wants to hear from you! Don’t hesitate to contact the dedicated team seeking solutions to enhance our children’s learning experiences. Your voice truly makes a difference!

So there you have it, Memphis! It’s an exciting time for our schools as they look to improve the environment for our students. With new roofs on the way and a community standing strong for positive change, the future looks bright!
