Affordable Spots to Cool Off in Memphis This Summer

Public Pools and Aquatic Centers Offer Respite from the Heat

As summer approaches in Memphis, temperatures are climbing up and children are free from schools, finding ways to stay active and cool in the sweltering heat become crucial. Fortunately, whether in the city, the suburbs, or local parks, Memphis offers numerous opportunities to swim in indoor or outdoor pools, partake in water aerobics classes, or have fun on splash pads.

City pools and aquatic centers are made freely accessible to those who sign up for a Memphis Parks Membership. A variety of aquatic experiences, including indoor and outdoor pools, splash parks, swimming lessons, and water aerobics classes, are catered to at these community centers. A comprehensive list of these aquatic centers can be easily found on The Memphis Parks website.

Summer Pool Passes and Spray Parks

Residents of Collierville have the opportunity to obtain a spray pass to access the two Collierville spray parks W. C. Johnson Park and Suggs Park. Notably, non-Collierville residents can enjoy these parks for a nominal fee of $10.

On the other hand, memberships of community centers such as the YMCA, JCC, Kroc Center and the Germantown Athletic Club offer access to a plethora of aquatic activities.

Memphis Splash Pads and Playgrounds

Shelby Farms Park, which is laden with several water features, offers another avenue to beat the summer heat. A Water Spray Playground is available for an hour’s playtime on Tuesdays, free of charge. Additionally, it offers over 20 lakes and ponds for fishing, though swimming and wading are not allowed. But canoe and kayak rentals are available, or visitors can bring their own.

On 3rd August, Overton Park will open its gates for the Summer Splash event, setting up waterslides on the Greensward without requiring any prior registration.

Escape from the Summer Heat at Splash Parks

The Children’s Museum of Memphis boasts a unique splash park, named H2Oh. According to the website, “This garden-themed exhibit provides over 7,700 square feet of cool fun. With 40+ sprayers including jet streams, mists, geysers, and water tunnels, children and their families can enjoy a refreshing retreat from the summer heat.”

Furthermore, the Memphis Zoo’s Monogram Foods Love Kids Foundation Splash Park is seasonally available for members and non-members for a small fee. Two daily sessions are held: 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm, and reservations can be made through the website.

Exploring community centers, adventuring in city pools or even playing on the splash pads at local parks, are all fantastic ways of making the most of the summer while avoiding the sweltering heat. Many public parks, including Tom Lee Park, feature a multitude of facilities where visitors can cool down effectively.
