MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A chilling incident has left a Mississippi teenager reeling, one month after a harrowing experience that began with a car accident and ended in a robbery. This 19-year-old has bravely come forward to share his story, shedding light on how quickly life can change and the lingering effects of such a traumatic event.
It was around 5:30 a.m. on October 27 when the unsuspecting teen was driving home from work on Lamar Avenue near Getwell. Suddenly, a blue Charger veered into his lane, causing him to lose control of his vehicle while driving approximately 60 mph. The impact was jarring as he slammed into a telephone pole, flipping his car.
Once the dust settled, he found himself crawling out of the wreckage. “I didn’t have any shoes on anymore, my nose was gushing out blood, my arm and head had glass all in them and my tailbone was nearly broken,” he recalled. To make matters worse, as he was trying to escape from his flipped-over Hyundai Elantra, he noticed the driver of the Charger had turned around and was waiting for him to exit the car.
As the young man emerged from the wreckage, he was met with pure chaos. The driver of the Charger began to yell at him, creating an atmosphere of fear. Then, two men appeared seemingly out of nowhere, asking if he was okay, only to quickly switch gears and mug him instead. “As they were robbing me, I tried to fight back,” he said, trembling at the memory. “They told me not to try to run away from them. The guy on my left had his gun up to my gut.”
This terrifying moment saw the thieves making him divulge the password to his phone, which they promptly recorded before making off with his belongings. “They took my cell phone, my wallet, containing my debit and credit cards, and $900 in cash I’d been saving to fix my other car’s transmission,” he added, frustration evident in his voice. “They tried to use my Cashapp card three times at stores nearby.”
The aftermath was just as devastating. The victim’s Hyundai Elantra was totaled just three weeks after he bought it, leaving him entirely reliant on others for transportation. “It has affected my everyday life,” he shared, his anxiety palpable. “I’m very paranoid about my surroundings now.” This innocent young man has been forced to grapple with feelings of vulnerability since that fateful morning.
Local police were quick to act following the report of the robbery. The victim was able to identify one of the suspects, leading to the arrest of 32-year-old Daravious Jackson, who was charged with aggravated robbery. However, as of now, no other arrests have been made in connection with this crime. Witnesses and community members are being urged to step forward with any additional information that may assist law enforcement in apprehending the remaining suspects.
In situations like this, it serves as a reminder that safety is paramount. Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has details about the other suspects to contact local authorities or reach out to Crimestoppers at (901) 528-CASH. Your tip could make a difference.
The traumatic experience of this young man highlights the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of community vigilance. Let’s hope that through sharing his story, he not only finds healing but inspires others to remain cautious and alert.
