After a slow start, Colby Rogers led the Tigers’ second-half surge, scoring all his 14 points in that period. Dain Dainja’s early performance with 19 points and strong defense helped Memphis to end their three-game losing streak and improve their season record to 17-4, marking their first win in New Orleans against Tulane since December 2020.
In a thrilling Tuesday night matchup, the No. 19 Memphis Tigers notched a commanding 68-56 victory over the Tulane Green Wave at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena. This win didn’t just boost Memphis’ season record to 17-4, but also marked their return to form after a three-game losing streak.
The star of the show was none other than Colby Rogers, who flipped the script in the second half. After a quiet first half, he found his rhythm, scoring all 14 of his points when it mattered most. His offensive outburst proved crucial, especially when he drilled two back-to-back 3-pointers that helped extend the Tigers’ lead to 51-46 with just under 10 minutes to play.
While Rogers shone in the second half, it was Dain Dainja who set the pace early on, leading Memphis with an impressive 19 points, shooting a standout 8-of-11 from the field. Dainja didn’t stop there; he also grabbed 10 rebounds, demonstrating a solid presence on both ends of the court. Another notable performance came from PJ Carter, who matched Rogers with 14 points, including four vital 3-pointers, helping Memphis light up the scoreboard with a total of nine shots from beyond the arc.
However, it wasn’t just Memphis’ shooting that stood out. They delivered a robust defensive effort, holding Tulane to a mere 36% shooting overall. The Green Wave struggled from distance as they attempted 24 three-pointers but only managed to hit four of them, translating to a dismal 17% success rate.
For Tulane, the evening was highlighted by the performance of Rowan Brumbaugh, who impressed with a game-high 19 points. Kaleb Banks was also a contributing factor for the Green Wave, adding 14 points. Despite their efforts, Tulane fell short as Memphis tightened the screws on their defense.
As the game drew closer to the finish line, Tulane briefly ignited hope for their fans when Banks scored a nifty layup, shrinking Memphis’ lead to 56-53 with just over four minutes remaining. However, that was as close as they would get. The Tigers responded with determination, scoring 12 of the last 15 points in the game, sealing the victory and sending their fans home happy.
This significant victory also had historical importance as it marked the first time Memphis won in New Orleans against Tulane since December 16, 2020. With this game now behind them, the Tigers are riding high as they head into their next challenge against Rice. Memphis stands a comfortable 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference, continuing to push for a stronger postseason performance.
Meanwhile, Tulane is sitting at a respectable 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference, but they will need to regroup and recalibrate quickly as they prepare to host Tulsa this Sunday.
As both teams look ahead, fans can feel the anticipation growing. Will Memphis build on their momentum, or can Tulane bounce back in their next outing? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – basketball in the American Athletic Conference is heating up, and there’s never a dull moment in the chase for glory!
