Memphis, Tennessee – The University of Memphis track and field teams set the stage for an exciting outdoor season at the Rhodes Invitational held from March 14-15, 2025. Hosted by Rhodes College, the two-day event did not disappoint, showcasing incredible talent, perseverance, and a little fun in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

Exciting Start for the Tigers

The outdoor season kickoff began on Friday, March 14, with events starting at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday saw the competition resume bright and early at 9:30 a.m. The Tigers were firing on all cylinders, eager to build on their recent success from the indoor season, where they achieved an impressive seven top-three finishes at the AAC Indoor Championships.

Shining Achievements from Indoors

As a refreshing reminder, during the indoor season, the Memphis teams accomplished some remarkable feats. Sascha Salesius Schmidt stood out by winning a gold medal in the shot put. Additionally, the Memphis distance medley relay team not only defended their glory but also set a shiny new school record. To add icing on the cake, the women’s 4×400-meter relay team followed suit by breaking their own school record!

Five Victorious Tigers at Rhodes Invitational

Fast forward to the Rhodes Invitational, and the Tigers continued to impress. Despite facing unfavorable weather and some delays, five Memphis athletes emerged as event winners. The determination and skill displayed by all nine Tigers who competed were commendable, with each athlete finishing within the top three of their respective events.

Among the champions were:

  • Ethan Belcher in Men’s Pole Vault, clearing 4.31 meters
  • Alessandro Belluz in Men’s Long Jump, leaping 7.03 meters
  • Adela Mullerova in Women’s Javelin Throw, reaching an impressive 48.68 meters
  • Gozie Okafor in Women’s Long Jump, landing 5.16 meters
  • Jean Yves Thiemele Marco in Men’s High Jump, soaring to 1.90 meters

Top Three Finishes Galore!

In addition to the winners, several Tigers secured remarkable top-three finishes:

  • Quentin Gentry took 2nd in Men’s Long Jump, with a jump of 6.87 meters
  • Ulysses Holbert also ranked 2nd in Men’s Javelin Throw, achieving 54.47 meters
  • Julia Konigshofer made her mark by securing 2nd in Women’s Javelin Throw, throwing 44.25 meters
  • Edward O’Brien rounded out the highlights with a 3rd place finish in Men’s Javelin Throw with 54.28 meters

Looking Ahead: The Next Challenge Awaits

As the dust settles from the Rhodes Invitational, the Tigers aren’t slowing down one bit! They’ll be splitting their teams to compete in the upcoming Ole Miss Classic and Bullog Alumni Relays on March 21 and 22. It’s shaping up to be another thrilling chapter in the Tigers’ journey this season.
