Memphis Trial for Ole Miss Student’s Disappearance Heads into Week Two

Memphis, Tenn. – We’re diving deeper into the chilling case of a former Ole Miss student, Timothy Herrington Jr., who stands accused of killing his fellow student, Jay Lee. In this gripping capital murder trial, which began last week, no body has been found, but the evidence is mounting against Herrington, leaving many in the courtroom, and beyond, on the edge of their seats.

The Start of the Investigation

Day five of the trial was filled with revelations that paint a disturbing picture of the events surrounding Lee’s disappearance. Initially reported as a missing persons case, it quickly evolved into a murder investigation. This dramatic shift occurred just days after Lee was reported missing on July 8, 2022. Authorities zeroed in on Herrington when they noticed suspicious Snapchat messages exchanged between him and Lee.

Former Oxford Police Lieutenant Shane Fortner took the stand on Friday, recalling how Lee’s friend had informed the police that Lee was planning to meet up with someone he had blocked. Little did they know at the time, that someone was Herrington. It also emerged that Lee’s car was found dropped off at Molly Barr Trails Apartments, where witnesses reported seeing a man jogging away shortly after, later identified as Herrington.

A Telling Video Encounter

When police knocked on Herrington’s door, body camera footage captured him confirming that he knew Lee. He claimed Lee had visited his apartment the night before he vanished, setting off alarm bells in the minds of investigators. Herrington even admitted to having intimate relations with Lee on the day of his disappearance and mentioned creating a new Snapchat account just for their conversations.

The Search Expands

The search for Lee spiraled from Oxford down to Grenada, Mississippi, covering a 50-mile radius as investigators relentlessly sought clues. Tensions flared further in the courtroom as defense attorneys squared off with prosecutors over the introduction of new evidence regarding a box truck linked to Herrington.

Defense attorney Kevin Horan argued against these new pieces of evidence, but Judge Kelly Luther ultimately allowed the prosecution to present video footage of the suspicious box truck seen outside Herrington’s parents’ home in Grenada.

Witness Testimonies Pile Up

The jury heard from various witnesses, including one who provided video evidence showing the truck parked outside a local bank and another who spotted Herrington at a dry cleaning store around the time of Lee’s disappearance. The neighbor residing close to Herrington’s parents confirmed seeing the truck but couldn’t identify if Herrington was the driver that day.

However, the most telling testimony came from Herrington’s former business partner, Tyson King. He stated under oath that Herrington was the only one with access to the box truck that day, as they were owners of a moving company called T & T Moving. This revelation adds a potentially pivotal layer to the prosecution’s narrative.

Duct Tape Purchase Raises Eyebrows

As if the case couldn’t get more intense, a Wal-Mart employee testified that Herrington purchased duct tape early that morning—around 6:49 AM—just moments before he switched vehicles. This detail raises even more questions, especially since law enforcement say he appeared to be looking at trash cans before he made his way back to his former business partner’s apartment.

In a representative clip played for the jury, investigators attempted to solidify Herrington’s connection to the events of July 8, showing him driving away from a gas station shortly after switching from his personal vehicle to the box truck.

Where Do We Go From Here?

As the courtroom drama continues to unfold, the absence of Lee’s body remains a poignant and troubling element in this case. The emotional weight of this trial is palpable, both for those who knew Jay Lee and the community following the proceedings. With each passing day, the stakes grow higher, as both sides present their narratives in a riveting fight for justice.

Stay tuned as we keep following this compelling story and bring you updates from the trial, capturing the critical moments that define this mysterious and tragic case.
