Memphis is buzzing with excitement as the local private institution, Memphis University School (MUS), moves forward with its ambitious campus expansion project. With plans filed for new buildings, it’s clear that MUS is preparing to not only enhance its facilities but also elevate the student experience for years to come.
Located at the bustling intersection of Park Avenue and Ridgeway Road, MUS is set to make a splash in the educational landscape with the addition of a brand-new arts and sciences building. This sleek two-story facility will occupy an impressive area of approximately 107,310 square feet and will be positioned on the north side of the campus, strategically nestled between Ridgeway Road and Massey Road.
According to the details shared with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development, this new building will come packed with modern amenities, including dedicated science labs that will bolster MUS’s commitment to academic excellence. Students can also look forward to music rehearsal and recording spaces, including a magnificent 850-seat auditorium, complete with a balcony and backstage facilities for performances.
MUS doesn’t just stop at aesthetics. The new development will also feature a tornado shelter to ensure the safety of students and staff during severe weather events. Additionally, the plans include a beautifully landscaped entryway to the campus, complete with a guardhouse and entrance control gates to enhance security.
One of the factors that makes this expansion particularly exciting is that the new buildings will be designed to harmonize with the already established Georgian architectural style prevalent on campus. Under the guidance of The Crump Firm Architects, MUS aims to create a visually stunning environment that resonates with its long-standing traditions.
As part of the expansion, MUS is anticipating an increase in parking demand. To accommodate this need, the initial parking phase of the project will provide 569 parking spots, comfortably exceeding the anticipated 508 spaces. This move promises to ease the parking burden for students, staff, and visitors alike.
The drive behind these facility improvements is deeply rooted in MUS’s strategic plan. The school envisions a campus that reflects its commitment to academic excellence and enriching student experiences. The enhancements will not only match the high caliber of teaching at MUS but will also elevate the academic journey for all students.
This initiative arrives alongside a notable increase in student enrollment. For the upcoming academic year, MUS anticipates having 610 students enrolled in grades 7-12, alongside a new sixth-grade class being introduced this fall. As families seek out quality education options, MUS continues to attract attention with its unwavering dedication to academic rigor.
As MUS embarks on this exciting journey, the community is encouraged to stay updated on the progress of this significant project. With potential for positive economic impact and community revitalization, this expansion could prove to be a game-changer not just for the school, but for the Memphis area as a whole.
In the meantime, stakeholders are invited to engage with future initiatives that aim to contribute to Memphis’s thriving educational landscape. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the MUS community, and the future certainly looks bright!
