MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It looks like things are finally returning to normal for many households in Memphis when it comes to utility bills. After a year of confusion and frustration, the Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW) has made significant strides in resolving the billing problems that affected thousands of customers. Last year, around 40,000 customers faced delayed bills, causing quite an uproar. However, MLGW President Doug McGowen announced some good news: that number has drastically dropped to about 5,000 customers.
McGowen shared that the current situation aligns with historical norms—“normal level is between 4,000 and 5,000 throughout our history,” he explained. For context, MLGW serves around 435,000 customers in the area, meaning these delays are now within acceptable limits. Even better, the team at MLGW is working hard to reduce that number even more!
Delving into the details, McGowen emphasized that fixing the root cause of the problem wasn’t a small task. “This was happening all over the globe, and these registers were in high demand. Fortunately, we had enough to fix our problems here. We pushed very hard to do that,” he said. MLGW called in a total of 30 contracted crews to lend a hand in replacing faulty meters, on top of their own team’s efforts. “It was a very specific and deliberate undertaking, and we’re not going to stop until we’ve looked at and touched every single meter in our system,” he promised.
In the meantime, what does this mean for those customers who receive a bill after a long wait? McGowen is empathetic, recognizing that seeing a larger-than-expected bill can lead to some serious sticker shock. If you find yourself in this situation, he strongly encourages you to reach out to MLGW. “Explain the issue and say you need assistance to make that large of a payment,” he advised.
MLGW’s team is ready and willing to help. “We have a range of assistance programs,” McGowan assured. If the bill was delayed due to MLGW’s own issues, customers can breathe a little bit easier knowing that any late fees won’t be applied immediately. “You will not be charged a late fee and you will not be disconnected until you have a chance to talk to us,” he added.
For those in need, a payment plan can be easily set up. There’s also a connection to other utility assistance programs if necessary. McGowen’s main message is simple: Don’t hesitate to reach out! A collaborative approach between MLGW and its customers can ease the burden of those unexpected bills and ensure everyone keeps the lights on and water flowing.
So, if you’re one of those affected, remember you’re not alone. MLGW is committed to working with you to find a solution that fits your needs. The utility provider is optimistic about tackling the remaining issues and is focused on returning to smooth sailing for all customers.
As Memphis continues to grow, keeping up with utility needs is essential. With the ongoing efforts from MLGW, it’ll be easier for residents to stay connected without the stress of billing issues hanging overhead. Let’s hope for continued progress down the road!
