Memphis, Tenn. – This weekend, the sunny vibes and soulful beats brought thousands of music fans together in the heart of Bluff City as the 7th Annual Mempho Music Fest kicked off. The weather was absolutely delightful with temperatures soaring to a high of 75°F, making it the perfect backdrop for an exhilarating weekend of music, friends, and fun.
With a beautiful mix of clouds and sunshine, Saturday marked the second day of the festival and it did not disappoint! Fans swarmed the Radians Amphitheater, located within the stunning surroundings of the Memphis Botanic Garden. The festival producer, Mike Smith, shared that they were expecting about 30,000 people to stroll through the grounds over the course of three days. Talk about an impressive turnout!
As the sun set, the energy in the air grew electric with legendary acts taking to the stage. Artists like Digable Planets and The Roots thrilled the crowd with their timeless hits. James Alexander from the famed soul group The Bar-Kays was itching with excitement, sharing, “I love the Digable Planets. I just saw their set. Now we’re waiting on The Roots!” It’s adjectives like “amazing” and “stellar” that floated through the conversations among festival-goers as they anticipated which act would take them on a musical journey.
We had the joy of catching up with the iconic hip-hop trio Digable Planets after their set. Mary Ann Vieira, better known as Ladybug Mecca, reflected on their performance with glowing praise: “The sound was stellar. The band is always in top shape, and we bring our best every time.” She mentioned how much of an honor it was to finally be part of the Mempho Fest, having heard so many wonderful things about it in the past.
Digable Planets members also took a moment to encourage the younger generation who dream of stepping into the entertainment world. Ishmael Butler, aka Butterfly, passionately urged aspiring artists to “stay true to who you are and don’t let anybody take you off your square.” Their words were heartfelt and resonated with many in the crowd, highlighting the supportive spirit that encapsulates festivals like this.
As we look forward to the third day of the festival, the excitement continues to build with acts like Jack White, Sublime with Rome, and several others lined up to perform. Music lovers, mark your calendars and grab your best gear because Mempho’s last day promises to deliver unforgettable performances!
On a side note, those attending the festival are enjoying remarkably pleasant weather. With clear skies and a gentle breeze from the north at 5 to 10 mph, it feels just right to be outdoors soaking up the sun. As temperatures drop to a refreshing low of 51°F in the evenings, don’t forget to bring a light jacket!
