Midtown Memphis GameStop Targeted Again in Bold Smash-and-Grab Burglary

Midtown Memphis GameStop Targeted Again in Bold Smash-and-Grab Burglary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It seems like déjà vu for locals as the infamous GameStop located on Union Avenue has been hit yet again by a group of thieves. This latest incident took place early Tuesday morning and involved a staggering number of stolen gaming consoles valued at over $50,000. Yes, you read that right!

Another Burglary in a String of Break-Ins

This isn’t the first time the Midtown GameStop has found itself under attack. In what feels like a recurring nightmare, Tuesday’s smash-and-grab was at least the fourth time in under two years that this particular store has been targeted. Investigators are still evaluating the damage, but it has left many in the community scratching their heads and feeling frustrated.

According to the police, the brazen burglary was caught on camera, showing up to 15 suspects dressed head-to-toe in black, making a quick getaway with a treasure trove of gaming gear. Among the most sought-after catches were:

  • 82 Playstation 5 consoles worth $45,200
  • Five Xbox Series X consoles valued at $3,000
  • Seven Nintendo Switch Mario Kart bundles worth $2,700

That’s a lot of loot! Sadly, the store remains closed as of Wednesday afternoon, leaving gamers and employees disappointed as they wait for updates on when they can get back to business as usual.

Previous Break-Ins: A Pattern Emerges

This troubling trend of theft has left many in the area concerned. Just this past January, two men broke into the same GameStop in the dead of night, walking away with around $15,000 worth of merchandise. And don’t forget about the incident that occurred a month earlier, where thieves smashed through a security gate to snatch a $500 PlayStation 5.

In an even more striking example, back in February of 2023, multiple individuals made off with various video games and controllers in yet another burglary. In total, that particular atmosphere of thievery hit three Memphis GameStop stores in less than a week. Talk about a worrying trend!

How You Can Help

As these disturbing events continue to unfold, local law enforcement is urging anyone with information about Tuesday’s burglary to step forward. If you know something or saw anything that might help move this investigation along, please don’t hesitate to call CrimeStoppers at (901) 528-CASH. Every bit helps!

Community Response

Residents have taken to social media to express their anger and frustration over the ongoing break-ins. Many are questioning what can be done to ensure the safety of local businesses and curb this disturbing trend. “This is ridiculous! Why can’t people just work for what they want?” one community member remarked.

As communities band together to fend off such criminal activities, questions linger. How can we better protect our favorite local shops? What measures are being taken to boost security? And most importantly, when will this string of burglaries finally come to an end?

Final Thoughts

While it’s disheartening to see such brazen acts of theft in a beloved local store, the spirit of the Memphis community remains strong. Together, we can hope for justice and work towards finding solutions to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Until then, keep your ears open and stay vigilant. We all want to ensure that our local GameStop can once again serve as a hub for gamers to connect, explore, and enjoy their passions.
