Sponsor Our ArticlesMemphis, Tenn. – Over the weekend, it seems the residents of Memphis got a shocking surprise while trying to access the Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) website. Many customers reported a security warning that raised eyebrows and caused some serious concern.
As the sun shone brightly on a warm Saturday, with temperatures hitting the mid-80s, MLGW customers were instead cooling off from the alarming warning that popped up on their screens. One customer, Ronnie Grayer, voiced his feelings about the unsettling situation. “I definitely won’t be putting my information in,” he said with a hint of worry in his voice. Another customer, Robert Johnson, shared similar sentiments, saying, “That’s disturbing.”
So, what exactly happened? It turns out that a technical glitch at MLGW left their website exposed. A local cybersecurity expert, Jeff Horton, president and owner of One Point Solutions Group, explained to those worried about their information, “Nothing about the website has actually changed. It’s just an oversight; somebody let that certificate expire.”
The security warning was due to an expired SSL certificate—that’s short for Secure Sockets Layer. This certificate is crucial as it helps to verify a website’s authenticity and encrypts users’ network connections to keep information safe. According to Horton, “They just have to renew that. But the underlying functionality of the website—the security features—nothing that has changed.”
If you are an MLGW customer, you might be wondering if your information is safe. The good news is that, according to Horton, while the website might have shown a warning, it didn’t compromise user data. Nevertheless, it’s wise to be cautious. If you’re unsure about entering personal information, it surely doesn’t hurt to hold off until the issue has been fully resolved.
As of Monday morning, MLGW was alerted about the issue at approximately 9 a.m., and customers can expect the company to address the situation quickly to regain confidence among those relying on their services.
In more serious news, Memphis is facing some concerns with a recent shooting incident in Whitehaven, along with a job cut by the International Paper, leading many to question the future of local tax breaks.
So, there you have it—a blend of warm weather, community concerns, and a bit of tech trouble. As we keep our eyes peeled on MLGW’s website status, let’s also soak in that lovely sunshine while we can!
