Memphis Embraces an Enchanting Evening of Musical Elegance at Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center

Memphis Welcomes an Exquisite Night of Musical Magic!

Memphis, get ready to be swept off your feet! The city witnessed a vibrantly enchanting evening on October 29 as folks gathered at the Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center for a concert that promised a delightful mix of talent and emotion. Under the expert direction of Dr. Francis Cathlina, the University Singers took to the stage, paired with the sweet sounds of Amy Nguyen on the piano. What a duo to grace our ears!

A Choir and a Treat!

Concert nights for the University Singers usually bring along extra musical friends, and this evening was no exception! The talented voices of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger Chorale took the spotlight first, under the guidance of Alex Belohlavek. They kicked things off with a breathtaking performance of “Color All Maps New” by Dylan Trần. The atmosphere was alive with the sound of harmonious voices, preparing the audience for the main attraction.

Debut of a Masterpiece

Dr. Cathlina then introduced a world premiere that had everyone on the edge of their seats. He announced the unveiling of a piece composed by Dr. Jordan Boyd, who hails from San Antonio. This thoughtful composition, titled “Atlas and Heracles,” was inspired by experiences shared between Dr. Boyd and one of his students—a bright star named Michaela Cobb from the University of Texas in San Antonio.

The themes of the piece delve deep into the burdens that we all carry throughout our lives. In a heartfelt video message, Michaela expressed her gratitude to the University Singers for interpreting her story through music—a true testament to the power of art in overcoming personal struggles.

A Choral Feast

The night continued on a melodic high, with the University Singers sharing several delightful selections. Their performance featured classics like “Warum” by Johannes Brahms, “Veni Sante Spiritus” by Zanaida Robles, and the emotionally resonant “I Should Be Glad” by Susan LaBarr.

Senior vocal performance major, Caroline Davis, who graced the stage as a soprano in the University Singers, shared her personal connection: “My favorite piece to learn and perform was I Should Be Glad because it tells a beautiful story about longing and the power of bringing people together.” Isn’t that simply beautiful?

Mark Your Calendars!

As if the night’s talent wasn’t enough, the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is rolling out a series of exciting choral events you simply can’t miss! Get ready for:
