Exciting New Barbershop Set to Open in East Memphis, Promising Unique Experiences and Community Vibes

Exciting New Barbershop Set to Open in East Memphis

Memphis is buzzing with excitement as Barons, a beloved local barbershop, sets its sights on opening a second location in the trendy retail hub of Williamsburg Village. This fresh new spot is not only expected to elevate grooming experiences but also to transform the very concept of a barbershop.

A Visionary Journey

The story begins nearly a decade ago with Dara Vongphrachanh, the founder of Barons. After working at International Paper, Dara yearned to break free from the traditional corporate lifestyle. “I always believed that great businesses solve real problems,” she reflects. “I wanted to create something that was people-focused and couldn’t simply be replaced by online shopping.”

After mulling over various ideas, Dara landed on the concept of a modern barbershop. Nine years ago, she opened the first Barons at 9289 Poplar Ave in Germantown, and since then, it has become a cornerstone of the community. Now, she’s ready to expand the concept further with a new location in Williamsburg Village, complete with exciting additions.

What’s New at Williamsburg Village?

The upcoming Barons will be more than just a place to get a haircut. This unique barbershop will boast a speakeasy atmosphere along with outdoor seating and a selection of delicious small plates. Dara has partnered with Alex Rasmussen, CEO of Neon Canvas, and received backing from local business leaders like Richard W. Smith, COO of FedEx, and Chris Landers, CEO of Somerhaven Management.

According to Dara, the new location is designed to create a community hub, where men and their families can come together not only for grooming but also for dining and socializing. “We want it to feel like a local hangout where everyone knows each other,” she explains. “It will be a place to grab a haircut, a cocktail, or just relax and meet a friend.”

A Unique Experience for Men

Understanding the needs of men in the grooming industry was a key part of Dara’s vision. Traditionally, men have a few options—big chains or women’s salons—but she saw a gap for something in-between. “We took all the classic elements of a barbershop that men love and enhanced them with modern conveniences,” Dara shares.

The Barons experience includes appointments (no more long waits), skilled barbers, and stylists who know how to achieve today’s trends, be it the updated mullet or sleek pompadours. “You can come in for a quick cut or indulge in a more luxurious service, complete with a facial and a beer,” she adds enthusiastically.

The Speakeasy Appeal

The addition of a speakeasy is a big draw for both Dara and her investors. Chris Landers, who is fascinated by the historical significance of speakeasies, commented, “They’re a cool concept that offers a unique alternative to typical bars and clubs.” The speakeasy will have a hidden entrance, taking inspiration from the prohibition-era aesthetics that offer an intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

Future Plans for Expansion

Dara initially opened a second Barons location in Downtown Memphis in 2019, but timing wasn’t on her side then. Now, with a renewed focus and a solid plan, she envisions more locations in the future. Some will feature only barbershops, while others will possess the speakeasy flair.

Excitement for the new Barons is palpable as it gears up to open early next year. “You don’t have to visit us just for a haircut,” Dara points out, “People can drop by for a cocktail, lounge on the patio, or satisfy their cravings with a snack.”

Memphis Community Spirit

Richard W. Smith, a supporter of local entrepreneurship, sums it up best: “Memphis needs more cool concepts like this.” He has put his money where his mouth is, backing everything from startups to innovative local business ideas. With the new Barons, it looks like East Memphis will soon have a standout destination that combines grooming with a vibrant community atmosphere.

For those in Memphis, keep an eye out for the grand opening of the new Barons! It promises to be an exciting addition to the local scene.
