Mary Kathleen (Kostka) Thorne – An Inspirational Artist
The esteemed Mary Kathleen (Kostka) Thorne, 69, peacefully passed away at her home on October 2, 2024. A true Rockford native, she was born on April 30, 1955, and was the beloved daughter of John F. and Alice J. (Mickey) Kostka. Proudly graduating from Boylan Catholic High School in the Class of 1973, Mary pursued her passion for art therapy and earned her master’s degree from Northern Illinois University.
Throughout her career, Mary worked diligently as a clinical counselor, making profound impacts on the lives of countless individuals. Her contributions to the community extended beyond her professional life; she was a thoughtful friend and mentor to many. Just two days before her passing, on October 4, 1996, she married her loving husband, Charles L. Thorne, at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Mary is survived by her adoring husband and sister, Maureen (Tim) Kelley. A visitation is set for October 11, 2024, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rockford. In honor of her memory, memorial contributions may be directed to the Thorne family.
Jason Javari “Lil Man” Jenkins – Rising Star
The Rockford community also remembers the young and vibrant Jason Javari “Lil Man” Jenkins, who was only 18 years old when he passed away on March 24, 2024. Born on December 1, 2005, Jason was the loving son of Nila Jenkins and Frederick LeFlore. An active student of Auburn High School, he was preparing to graduate in the spring of 2024.
Jason brought a competitive spirit to the football field at Booker Washington Community Center and was a proud member of the Christian Union Full Gospel Ministries, serving on the Mime Team. His vibrant presence touched those around him, and his loss is felt deeply in the hearts of his family and friends. Visitation for Jason is scheduled for April 5, 2024, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. and the funeral service will follow on April 6, 2024.
Richard A. Dickson – Dedicated Family Man
Another respected member of the community, Richard A. Dickson, aged 66, passed away on April 1, 2024. Born on December 13, 1957, Richard was a devoted family man who married Irma Sanchez on February 7, 2012. He worked tirelessly as a truck driver and electrician, contributing to the local economy and supporting his family.
Richard was an active attender at Woodside General Baptist Church, where he built connections with fellow parishioners. Funeral services are planned for April 9, 2024, at the same church, allowing family and friends to come together in remembrance.
Janice Marie Brown – Groundbreaking Trailblazer
Lastly, the community mourns the loss of Janice Marie Brown, a remarkable individual who passed away on August 18, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on May 28, 1948, in Prescott, Arkansas, Janice made history as the first African American employee of the Rockford Fire Department, serving for an inspiring 33 years.
After her retirement, Janice remained engaged in the community as a Telecommunications Specialist at Rockford University for 13 years. A passionate bowler and active community member, her contributions will be fondly remembered. Visitation will be held on August 23, 2024, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a funeral service the following day at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory.
